Chapter 5 Defeated Completely
Arianna covered her eyes, trembling, her figure desolate like autumn leaves.
Every day, Chris made it clear to her just how much he despised her.
Arianna knew she should leave, to preserve what little dignity she had left.
But she didn't move, not until the partially closed door was pushed open, and Johnathan exclaimed in surprise, "Arianna..." It had been some time since they last saw each other, why did she look so pale and thin?
Inside the room, Chris froze for a moment. For some reason, a momentary panic washed over him, but it was quickly suppressed by the satisfaction welling up in his heart.
Arianna didn't look at Johnathan. Like a wandering soul, she walked into the study, her voice trembling as she asked, "Why? Are you addicted to pretending to be blind? Is it fun?"
"Didn't you hear everything?" Chris pursed his thin lips, a mocking smile appearing in his unfocused eyes. "Didn't hear clearly? Do you need me to repeat it?"
Arianna's hanging hand clenched into a tight fist, the veins on the back of her hand bulging. Her emaciated figure finally spoke up about something she had been holding in for two years.
"Two years ago, I went abroad to find Chelsea. She knew you had gone blind but still refused to come back. Not long after, she married someone else. Even so, do you still not mind? Do you still love her?"
After saying this, she carefully watched Chris' expression, hoping to find a trace of anger and disappointment on his face.
She knew that would be her lifeline.
But in the end, she was disappointed.
Chris was momentarily stunned, then sneered.
"Of course, I don't mind what Chelsea does. But anything you do, Arianna, disgusts me."
He knew that whatever he said would cause Arianna pain, and the more she suffered, the more relieved his tense heart would be.
Arianna forced a bitter smile, and the last glimmer of light in her eyes extinguished completely.
Defeated so thoroughly.
She touched her eyes again, but they were dry and couldn't shed any tears.
How she wished to say, "I disgust you? But I still want to give you everything I can... Chris, I love you more than anyone else in this world..."
But what use would that be?
He continued to maliciously attack her, forgetting that she was also a human being with flesh and blood.
Beside the door, Johnathan furrowed his brows, unable to help but interrupt, "Arianna, let go."
Arianna forced a smile, but it looked even worse than crying in Johnathan's eyes.
"Just five more days," she said, then lowered her head and left as if escaping.
Johnathan looked in the direction Arianna had left, worry evident in his eyes as he watched her trembling figure.
Looking at Chris sitting in the room, he couldn't help but shake his head and sigh, "I hope you won't regret it."
"Regret? What's that?" Chris dismissed it with disdain.
A pang of pain struck Johnathan's heart.
Chris and Arianna hadn't held a wedding ceremony, they had only obtained the marriage certificate.
He still remembered how Arianna cherished that marriage certificate, kissing it repeatedly.
A person's endurance has its limits. There will always come a day when they can't take it anymore. When that day comes, will Chris understand what he has lost?
After Arianna ran back to her room, she weakly collapsed on the ground, taking deep breaths. Clutching her chest, which was constricted to the point of suffocation, she pleaded in a low voice, "Chris, can't you be a little less heartless? Can't you leave me with a shred of hope?"
She could almost imagine Chris saying, "Leave you with hope so you can continue to cling to me?"
He had given all his tenderness to Chelsea, unwilling to spare even a bit for her.
Her heart felt as if it were soaked in bitter gall, the bitterness reaching its peak.
It didn't matter. Soon, she wouldn't feel pain or bitterness anymore...
The next day, like every morning, Arianna woke up early and busied herself in the kitchen.
When she knocked on Chris' bedroom door, carrying breakfast, she was met with a resounding slap!
