Chapter 4
Sophie
He kissed her on the lips, That stung.
"My cousin is here." Calling me cousin wasn't nice either.
"I was just leaving, don't worry."
I turned around; I needed to get away. Just then, Charlotte arrived with red eyes and took my drink.
"Friend, I need another one."
"What do you have?"
"Please."
"I'll be right back."
Upon returning to the liquor table, Damian turned his back to anyone who approached and hugged his girlfriend around the waist.
"I have nothing to do with her! Where did you get that idea? Didn't you see her? She's not my type, she's not attractive."
"She's your cousin."
"She's not either. Well, out of affection and because of the great friendship between our parents, we were taught to see them that way from a young age, but for me she's nothing. She's nobody." That hurt even more; my eyes stung, I couldn't hold it in.
"Wow," I said, and as she turned around I saw the embarrassment in her eyes.
"Soph." I raised my hand.
"That term is for family and true friends. I think I heard you say, 'I'm nobody.'" I tried to stop myself, but I couldn't. My eyes welled up. "Answer me, Damian Calloway. Is my brother Adrian nobody to you too?"
"Curly, don't say... "
"How hypocritical and fake you are. Everyone in the family speaks so highly of who your father was, and now he's perpetuated that image. It's very disappointing to know who you really are. You're more like your Uncle Victor Crane than Derek or Robert."
"Are you having fun?" Robert arrived for some drinks.
"Robert... "
"Robert? Soph, since when did I stop being your uncle?"
My lip trembled; that was integrity, that was gentleness, that was being a man of true convictions. Tears welled up in my eyes, and Damian and I never stopped looking at each other.
"Ask your son. Although... If I'm nobody... What's your opinion of this man?" he was furious. "Did he stop being your father? You're a complete liar, Damian."
"What's going on?"
Robert was bewildered. Damian kept staring at me; I couldn't tell if he was doing it with hatred, pain, or regret.
"The damage was done. I know who you are, excuse me."
"Damian?"
"I'm sorry, Dad."
