Chapter 1: A Truce and a Gift

“I think that we have reached an understanding. We will stay from your lands, back you if there is need and you will do for us.” The two men were standing in an open space before a rather stoney keep that was on the side of the mountain. The snow was coming down rather quickly in thick flakes but there was no wind at the moment.

The first man who had his back to the keep. He owned this wild mountainous land and had no expression on his devilishly handsome face. He was tall with broad shoulders and a powerful build. Clearly fit the image of one that would rule these lands. There was a seriousness to him as well and his hazel colored eyes were rather piercing. His dark chocolate brown hair ruffled in the sudden wind that was gone a moment later. This King would not be trifled with and he stood strong before the other.

“Past transgressions are not forgotten Michael. We may have a truce for now, but I more than remember what you have done. You might not have been very successful in my lands, but you have stomped on others who get in bed with you.” His voice was deep and he did not give Michael a title which, obviously rubbed the man the wrong way, but they weren’t friends. Ky was not seeing anything more here than a truce that he’d keep, but Michael would probably break. When he did King Ky was going to bring hell down on him.

“Does that mean you do not want the truce?” Michael asked in a stoic tone. He was shorter than Ky with dark blonde nearly brown hair. His eyes were shrewd, a light brown almost tan color. They were both wearing dark clothing. Though Michael and his men had thicker warmer clothes on. He had a good number with him, all on horses. Ky’s men wore less even with the cold. It did not bother them, and thicker wear would impede their movements.

“No, that’s not what it means. I’ll honor what was decided, as long as you do. I am just stating a general observation. I keep my people in check, make sure you keep yours. After all we helped you more than us getting help I believe. Just barbaric inhumans up here as you put it, lacking intelligence and easy to take from.”

“Words I confess were said in ignorance. I am aware of damage done by groups that were unknown to me. Leadership along our borders has been fixed. I can see earning forgiveness is hard with you.”

“Forgiveness is not what you want. Respect however is a far harder item to get.” Michael made a motion and a horse moved forward at the break in the crowd. There was no shift in positon from the few back a bit from where Ky stood. His trusted guard, but even with the higher number before them at the moment. Michael was not in his lands, and Ky was not what he appeared. It would be the last thing they ever did if they attacked here at his front door. Ky’s hospitality was wearing thin. This foolish man had no idea what was hiding below Ky’s civilized surface.

“I have payment for what was taken or destroyed. An apology when you might not take it from my lips. The horse stopped by him and the rider got off swiftly. The form was hidden below the black thick cloak, but you could tell it was a woman. The hood was up but there was a flash of a deep blue dress and black satin hair. Ky narrowed his gaze. What exactly did Michael think he was offering?

“What exactly do you think is worth the damage your people caused?” He asked, he wasn’t stupid. The attacks he was talking about were not some rouges that slipped through. Michael had ordered some of those attacks to test Ky’s reaction time and defenses. He knew because they had gotten it out of a few of the captured men.

The woman pulled a couple small chests from the pouch on the horse and moved froward toward him. Her hood covered most of her face but he got a glimpse of the womanly form when she turned and the cloak moved. She was on the taller side for a woman. Her hair spilled out just a bit from the large hood. She stopped before him and glanced up for a moment before curtsying slightly. She didn’t say anything, but she was a beautiful woman with ice blue eyes. She held up the two chests that were stacked on each other. He reached and opened the first.

“The first has a dragon sapphire in it. Which I think more than covers what was done. The second has Elven gold in it. Completely pure, nowhere near the worth of the sapphire but just an added bonus to show I’m serious about keeping a balance with you. A real war is coming from the other side. We know that if Kaves makes it through here we are all dead.” He looked at Michael over the woman’s head as she was looking more down and shorter than he was.

“I suppose it shows your willingness. That you realized the gravity of the wars coming our way.” Though he was sure the main reason he was getting such a rare object that was worth so much was because normal humans couldn’t touch it.”

“I am.” Michael moved to the horse that the woman had gotten off of and swung up onto it with expert skill. He then gestured to the woman.

“Just the last parting gift, just in case you aren’t convinced and think more is needed to show how serious I am. This is Adele, she is my fifth child, and don’t worry I’m not offering her for marriage or anything. Just a gift, you can do with her as you wish. She is well schooled in the help and running of a keep as a woman should be, if you have need. Or you can just put her with your servants and other uses. She’s not used just in case you would like that pleasure for yourself.” Ky glanced down at this Adele who hadn’t said one word. Nor looked up, just stood there.

“Seems strange to just hand your daughter off for free.” He commented dryly and Michael looked at his daughter motioning for his men to move. Which they started to.

“I have a good number of children. Adele was best suited for this task. She is aware of her worth and value as a woman. You wouldn’t have accepted a marriage so there was no reason to offer my eldest daughter, as she is already betrothed. I hear you have higher tastes anyways when it comes to women as you have no wife yet. What’s better than a woman without a contract?” Suspicious was what Ky thought, but it was very clear he was just going to leave the woman stand there in the snow and cold otherwise. Which Michael turned and moved with his men. Ky just watched him for a moment narrowing his eyes at him. He couldn’t trust him as far as he could throw him.

“Navi!” Ky called sharply and a man came forward from where he’d been standing and was the same height as Ky, he stopped next to him. His hair a very light brown as were his eyes.

“Take the chests and put them in the vault.” Navi gave a serious nod and took the chests from the woman. Both were about the size of large books. He stared at Adele, he wasn’t much for mousey complacent women. Not that he wanted an arguing harpy, but whatever. He thought for a moment and it was best to figure out how loyal she was to her father and motive. Though he really did not put it past Michael to just use his people. In this case his daughter as payment. He didn’t doubt that Michael didn’t care if his daughter was given a proper job or used as a whore.

“Do you speak?” He asked darkly. She was staring more at his shoulder with no expression on her face.

“Yes my King I speak.” Her voice was very feminine and held a soft quality to it. He made a slight motion for the others to disperse. He knew that those who were unseen would follow Michael and make sure that he left without incident.

“Good. Follow.” He told her sharply and she moved following him toward the keep and the door that opened as they approached. The snow was starting to come down a bit harder now and the wind was picking up a bit. The doors were closed behind them with a thud and he moved swiftly but she kept up with him. He contemplated just what he was going to do, or how he was going to deal with this woman dropped in his lap.
