Chapter Four
Fate Like In Dramas
Camilla could not see a hint of recognition in Logan's eyes. "You are the new secretary," he commented in a cool voice.
"Y-yes," she stammered, avoiding eye contact.
"Welcome." He strolled into his own office, not bothering to give her a second glance.
"Oh my gosh," Camilla gasped, placing one hand over her mouth and the other over her chest.
She felt like the world was playing a sick joke on her if not why was Logan here? She was not prepared to see him until much later in the day when they had agreed to meet up for coffee so as to go over the proposed marriage contract.
She stared in shock as Logan walked into the inner office; a clear indication that he was her boss. She chided herself now for not obliging the advice of HR when she had been told to read up on her boss online to have an idea of what he was and what he looked like.
Still clutching her chest in mild shock she reached for her phone to call her friend, Paige. There was no way she could keep this information to herself. She had to assure herself that she was not crazy for thinking this was a weird setup the universe had thrown her way.
“Paige?” she squealed into the phone as the line connected.
“Hmm?”
“You're still asleep?” Camilla asked credulously.
“Hey, not all of us have corporate jobs to wake up to,” Paige said groggily.
“Well, I have something that will wake you right up,” Camilla said.
“I don't want coffee,” was the response on the other end.
“I can't make your coffee from my office, silly,”
“What is it then?”
“I came to work today and guess what?”
“I'm still half dreaming Camilla, I can't play the guessing game right now”
“Logan is my boss.”
There was silence at the other end for two seconds after which Paige said, “Now, I'm awake, wide awake in fact.”
“I know right? I just cannot believe it, like why?”
“Maybe this is meant to be, maybe the universe is giving you a sign that this is meant to be,” Paige said to which Camilla scoffed.
“Meant to be? This is not some kdrama Paige when we will later fall in love and live happily after.”
“You never know.”
“I know very well that I am only agreeing to do this to save my mother, nothing else, no feelings involved,” replied Camilla. She was slightly angry that Paige would even suggest a thing as fate.
“Well you know what they say, never say never.”
“Paige you don't under…” a cough interrupted her, she turned to see Logan standing in front of her desk.
“Sorry Paige, Gotta go, bye-bye, love you,” she made kissing noises before ending the call.
“Sir?” she quipped after a while of waiting for Logan to speak. He had indicated that he wanted her attention with the cough and now he was just standing there staring at her. It was quite intimidating especially as he made her feel very small. She could tell that he was very tall, taller than her in fact and she was taller than most people including men.
“I didn't know I paid people to make personal calls during work hours,” the coldness his voice bore shocked Camilla and sent shivers all over her body. When the shivers had passed however she was just left with shock.
Why was he using that tone with her?
As though they were complete strangers?
She made eye contact with him and there was no flicker of recognition; she was baffled but decided to play it cool.
“I apologise, sir, I…”
“You clearly have not read the work handbook given to you. I thought HR would have made you read up about me online,” he looked at her father condescendingly and Camilla was beginning to doubt if even a fake relationship could ever happen between them.
“Sir, I apologise once more for…”
“Also your hair. Don't you know you are to put it in a tight bun?”
“I'm sorry what?” scolding her for her work ethic was one thing but what did her hair have to do with any of this? It wasn't like she had died in some crazy colour or it looked unkempt.
“Your hair…for goodness sake read the damn handbook!” Logan's voice was just below shouting.
“Tight bun…hair…it's in the handbook?” Camilla was slightly astonished. What company cared about the hair of their staff enough to put it in a handbook? No wonder she had sensed something weird anytime she had entered this building and now that Logan mentioned the hair, it suddenly dawned on her. Everyone that worked here had their hair in a tight bun! How scrupulous was that? Wasn't that even illegal?
“Read the handbook… if you do you will realise that you are fifteen minutes late with my coffee and you have only ten minutes to get my breakfast,” Logan hissed before walking back to his office.
Camilla meanwhile was stumped for words. She would have called her best friend to bitch about her annoying boss but she had no time. She made his coffee in record time and entered his office with it. He was sitting behind his desk but he was backing the front of his desk so as quietly as she could she dropped the coffee on his table and tried tiptoeing out of the office. However, before she could get to the door Logan's voice stopped her.
“I smell milk in my coffee. Read the damn handbook! I want my coffee black with no sugar or cream! Can you do anything right?”
Camilla sighed and took the coffee off the table. She walked out of the office and drank all of it in one gulp; there was no way she was going to allow perfectly good coffee to go to waste. She set out on the task of making him another cup and to her shock he complained that it was simply not the right temperature. When she asked what the right temperature would be, he referred her to the handbook.
