chapter 3

After that, I went straight to the wolves-only medical center.

On the way, my phone wouldn’t stop buzzing with alerts.

Every headline was smearing Aiden—calling him indecent, saying he willingly joined a dangerous “brawl,” and died from exhaustion when his body couldn’t take it.

The footage being spread had been carefully edited. Faces and scent identifiers of the attackers were blurred or erased, audio scrubbed clean.

The only thing shown in perfect clarity was Aiden’s desperate face.

Lillian and her pack of accomplices stayed hidden in the shadows—pristine, untouched, unnamed.

I shook so hard I could barely breathe.

A year ago, Lucas was nearly killed in a border clash—massive blood loss, urgent need for a rare match.

Only Aiden and Lillian matched his type. Lillian dodged it with “I faint at the sight of blood,” and Aiden didn’t hesitate—he gave Lucas what he needed to live.

And now Lucas was repaying that debt by grinding Aiden’s honor into the dirt for that ungrateful girl.

I curled my fingers into a fist so tight my nails broke skin, blood beading in my palm.

At the medical center, the second I saw my mother lying there—frail, barely hanging on—every tear I’d been choking back snapped loose.

Her wrinkled hand lifted with effort, her throat pushing out broken sounds.

I grabbed her hand and sobbed, “Mom…”

A nurse stepped forward. “Luna, I think she’s trying to tell you something.”

I wiped my face, watching as the nurse carefully adjusted my mother’s mask so she could form weak words.

Her voice came out like smoke: “Aeliana… find… contacts… Linus… find him…”

The moment the words ended, the breathing mask went back on.

I hadn’t even had time to process it when Lucas’s voice sounded behind me—calm, steady, full of control:

“Sweetheart. Have you decided?”
