The King of Westbridge
Anthony Carter had survived bad schools before. Westbridge was different here, the danger had a name, a table by the window, and everyone’s complete, terrified silence.
He has been at Westbridge Academy for exactly three days when he realized there was one rule that mattered more than every other rule combined.
Nobody said it out loud, Teachers never mentioned it, It wasn’t written in any handbook Yet everyone followed it.
Stay off Lucas Kingstone’s radar.
Anthony first noticed it during lunch on Wednesday, The cafeteria was packed.
Students filled every table. Conversations blended together into a constant buzz of voices, laughter, and clattering trays.
Normal at least on the surface but Anthony had spent three days watching people and people told stories without speaking.
Every few minutes, students glanced toward the center of the cafeteria, Not obviously, Quick looks, Careful looks.
The kind of looks people gave something dangerous, Anthony followed their gaze.
There was a large table near the windows, Eight students were sitting down there, Laughing, Relaxed, Comfortable, Too comfortable.
Everyone else seemed to orbit around them, No one sat nearby, No one crossed through their space.
Students unconsciously adjusted their paths to avoid them at the center of the table sat a boy with dark hair and sharp blue eyes.
He looked completely at ease, Like the entire room belonged to him.
“That’s him.”
Anthony turned, A student from his history class had appeared beside him The boy followed Anthony gaze.
“Lucas Kingstone.”
Even the way he said the name sounded cautious, Anthony looked back at Lucas.
Honestly?
He didn’t seem that impressive, Confident, sure Popular, obviously.
But Anthony had seen popular students before Nothing about Lucas explained why hundreds of students acted like he was royalty.
“People are actually scared of him?” Anthony asked.
The boy laughed nervously.
“Scared?”
He shook his head.
“That word is too small.”He said to him.
Anthony frowned.
“What do you mean?”He asked.
The boy lowered his voice.
“People are terrified of him.”
Before Anthony could ask why, a loud crash echoed across the cafeteria.
Every head turned, A tray hit the floor, Food scattered everywhere, Milk splashed across the tiles.
Standing beside the mess was a thin boy Anthony recognized from mathematics classes.
Ryan, he is very quiet, Always sitting down alone, Right now he looked like he’d accidentally stepped in front of a moving train.
Anthony followed Ryan horrified gaze, The tray belonged to Lucas, The cafeteria began falling silent.
Not instantly, Gradually, Table by table, Conversation by conversation Until the room became unnaturally quiet.
Ryan swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry.”
His voice shook.
“It was an accident.”
Lucas stood up slowly, That simple movement somehow made the room even quieter.
Anthony glanced toward where the teachers was standing, None of them moved.
One pretended to read be something on his phone, Another suddenly became very interested in her paperwork.
Nobody was going to help, Lucas walked toward Ryan, Slow, Calm, Completely unhurried.
The confidence was almost unsettling, He stopped directly in front of him.
“An accident?”
Ryan nodded immediately.
“Yes. I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”
Lucas tilted his head, A faint smile appeared.
“Funny thing.”
Ryan looked terrified.
“My accidents always seem to involve you.”
Several students nearby winced, Ryan face went pale.
“It won’t happen again.”
Lucas nodded thoughtfully. Then he reached toward Ryan chest, Ryan froze.
Lucas unclipped the student identification badge attached to his uniform, Carefully, Almost politely.
“Please,” Ryan whispered.
Lucas ignored him He turned the badge over in his fingers, Examining it, Studying it, Enjoying the moment.
Anthony felt irritation growing in his chest, The whole thing felt wrong Lucas finally looked up.
“Do you know what happens when someone disrespects me?”He said to him.
Ryan mouth opened, Nothing came out, The silence stretched, Lucas smiled.
“Wrong answer.”
His friends laughed Not because the joke was funny Because Lucas expected them to.
Then Lucas snapped the badge in half, The crack echoed through the cafeteria, Ryan flinched Lucas dropped the broken pieces on the floor.
“There.”
He smiled.
“Now you’ll remember.”
More laughter Ryan was staring at the shattered badge For a second Anthony thought he might cry.
Instead, Ryan crouched down Picked up the broken pieces And walked away.
Head lowered, Humiliated, Nobody stopped him, Nobody said anything.
Lucas simply returned to his table Within moments conversations resumed The cafeteria acted like nothing had happened Anthony couldn’t believe it.
“That’s it?” he asked.
The student beside him looked confused.
“What?”
“Nobody’s going to do anything?”
The boy stared at him, Then realization hit.
“Oh.”
He move closer.
“You are new.”
Anthony crossed his arms.
“What does that mean?”He asked.
“It means you don’t understand yet.”The boy replied.
The boy voice dropped lower.
“Stay away from Lucas Kingstone.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone who challenges him regrets it.”
Anthony looked back at Lucas, He was laughing with his friends, Relaxed, Happy.
As if humiliating Ryan had never happened, That was what bothered Anthony most, Not the power, The enjoyment.
Lucas had liked it, Anthony could see it and people who enjoyed hurting others are dangerous, Very dangerous.
Almost as if he sensed someone watching him, Lucas suddenly looked up, Their eyes met.
The cafeteria seemed to disappear, Neither looked away, Several seconds passed.
Long enough to become intentional Long enough to mean something, A challenge, A warning, A promise.
Anthony wasn’t sure Then Lucas looked away first The moment ended But the feeling remained and Anthony knew instinctively This wasn’t over.
School finally ended, The afternoon sky glowed orange as students poured through the front gates.
Anthony walked slowly His thoughts kept returning to Ryan, To Lucas, To the fear he’d seen in everyone’s eyes.
What kind of school allows one student to control everyone else?
He kicked a loose stone off the sidewalk.
“Unbelievable.”
“What is?”
Anthony froze.
The voice came from behind him Calm, Relaxed, Dangerously confident He turned.
Lucas Kingstone was standing a six feet away along, No followers, No audience, Just him.
Anthony immediately became alert.
“What do you want?”He asked.
Lucas smiled slightly.
“You didn’t look away.”
Anthony frowned.
“What?”
“At lunch.”
Lucas slipped his hands into his pockets.
“Most people do.”
“I noticed.”
A small laugh escaped Lucas Not mocking, Interested.
“You really are different.”
“Is that supposed to be a compliment?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly Anthony almost laughed At least he was honest Students passed around them.
Yet nobody came close,Everyone gave them space Like they could feel something happening, Lucas studied him carefully.
“You haven’t figured out how Westbridge works.”
“Apparently not.”
“You should.”
Anthony raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
Lucas stepped closer Not enough to be threatening Just enough to make the point.
“Because people who ignore the rules become examples.”
Anthony held his gaze.
“That sounds like a threat.”
“No.”
Lucas smiled.
“It’s advice.”
The confidence in his voice was unsettling Like he genuinely believed he controlled the school Maybe he did.
For several seconds neither moved, Neither looked away, Finally Lucas nodded.
Almost like he’d reached a decision Then he turned and started walking, Anthony watched him go.
The conversation should have ended there It didn’t Because halfway into the crowd, Lucas stopped Then he looked back over his shoulder and smiled.
“See you tomorrow, Anthony.”He said to him.
Anthony stomach dropped, His name, Lucas knew his name The problem was that Anthony had never told him.
Not once, Not ever, He hadn’t introduced himself, Hadn’t spoken to Lucas before today yet somehow Lucas knew exactly who he was.
The crowd swallowed Lucas He disappeared among the students, Anthony stood motionless, A strange feeling settled over him.
The same feeling he’d experienced when he read the note from Westbridge Academy, The same feeling he’d felt when he saw the silver symbol, The feeling that someone was watching.
His phone suddenly vibrated, Anthony pulled it from his pocket, Unknown Number.
His heartbeat quickened, he opened the message slowly, There was no greeting, No explanation only a single photograph.
Anthony stared, The blood drained from his face, The photo showed his house, Taken recently, Very recently.
His mother was visible through the living room window, Below the picture was a single sentence.
Welcome to the game, Anthony Carter.
A second message arrived immediately, This one contained only a symbol, A silver symbol.
The exact same symbol from the acceptance letter, Anthony pulse thundered in his ears Then a third message appeared, Three chilling words.
The King knows.
Anthony looked up sharply.
Across the street, standing beneath the fading evening light, Lucas Kingstone was watching him Smiling.
Then he turned and disappeared into the crowd, Leaving Anthony with one terrifying realization.
Getting accepted into Westbridge Academy had never been an opportunity It had been an invitation.
And somehow He had just stepped into something far bigger than a school.
Anthony had come to Westbridge to start over. Instead, he had just signed his own death warrant.
