Chapter 5 Maya's pov

Chapter 5

Maya's pov

My heart sank deep inside my chest, my breath was heavy and the ground beneath my feet began to spin.

Was this really happening?

“I must be dreaming…” I whispered below my breath then looked up gulping down saliva, but the picture in front of me didn't change.

My sister joined Barry with a broad smile on her face and then they kissed.

Everybody cheered, the clapping soared above the sound of my sobs as I left running with tears rolling down my cheeks.

As soon as I got inside my room, I threw myself on my bed, sobbing into my pillow.

How could he? Didn't he say he was going to pick me?

Did I do something wrong?

I spun back my memories, what did I do wrong?

Was I too pushy? I wondered as I finally lifted my head from the pillow.

But he was always beating around the bush…I needed to tell him what I wanted because it appeared that he was fine with how secretive everything was.

I wasn't though.

Wasn't that the case with Madeline too?

She asked him to make a choice…and he choose her.

What about everything between us? How could he toss me aside like trash?

I wiped my tears with the back of my hand rubbing my face with a soft mumble beneath my breath.

“I have to talk to him, maybe this is a misunderstanding…”

That night, I couldn't sleep a wink and the very next morning, ignoring my chores, I went looking for Barry.

I found him.

With Madeline by side.

Throughout the day it was like they were glued to each other, I didn't get an opening to talk to him that day.

Or the next.

Or the day after.

This continued until it was nearing a week until an unexpected opportunity landed right on my laptop, the headmaid called me to the kitchen and handed me a snack tray.

For a brief oblivious moment, I looked at the biscuits and fruits entertaining the thoughts that they belonged to me.

“These are for Madeline,” she said sharply. “She's in the garden right now so take it to her and tell her that lunch will be ready soon,”

“Alright,” I bit down on my bottom lip. The only thing that differentiated me from a maid right now was having the official tag slapped on my face.

When I arrived in the garden my eyes traveled around until it landed on the bench under the apple tree generously providing shade. My heart leaped when I saw Barry sitting on the bench.

I wanted to call out to him immediately but I held myself back and carefully made my way to him when he looked up he smiled at me.

“Madeline I told you you didn't have to get the snacks yourself…”

His voice trailed off as he started taking in my tattered appearance and realizing that he was talking to me and not my sister.

He had known us since we were kids and yet still struggled to tell us apart.

“Barry, can we talk?” I said dropping the tray on the bench but still standing up straight.

He was not meeting my eyes again, he leaned back folding his hands in front of his chest.

“Can we have this conversation another time? Or maybe you can just let it go?”

My breath hung in my throat for a moment then I took in a huge gulp of air.

“How could you say that to me? Barry I gave you everything…every single part of me there was nothing that I held back,”

He finally looked at me but I could see the difficulty in holding my eyes.

“So what?” He said, his jaw tightening. “You're not a kid Maya, we had our fun and now it's over. You didn't actually think that we were going to last, did you?”

The tears I was holding back started creeping out.

“But you promised me th-”

“I never promised you anything,” he cut me off.

“You used my body and I used yours, I don't see why I have to be the bad guy in this situation.”

The tears were pouring out generously, I bent my head as I tried to record a specific moment where Barry had said clearly in black and white that he would choose me.

Nothing came to mind.

The only thing I could remember was him vaguely hinting that he might, but never saying it outright.

“Look, Madeline is going to be here soon, you've already dropped the tray so why don't yo-”

“Barry, I'm pregnant.” I dropped the bomb.

He looked at me with wide, stunned eyes.

“Who's the father?”

My mouth fell open, but words failed to come out.

“Are you really serious? Who else could be the father?”

His face grew visibly pale, in a sharp quick movement instead of to his feet pacing back and forward under the shade of the tree.

“Why didn't you say anything sooner?” He said without stopping his pacing or looking at me.

“Maybe if you had actually tried it to approach me for the past couple of days I might have gotten the chance to do so,”

He suddenly paused, then grabbed my shoulders gripping on tightly.

“Maya, you have to abort this baby.” He said it like a warning.

Abort?

I placed my hand protectively over my stomach area.

“How could you say that?” I asked, sounding like I was out of breath.

He looked at me and the reflection in his eyes hardened.

“Just how dumb can you be Maya?” He spat out.

“Please, Barry…don't do this…I love you,”

I tried to reach out to him but he only pulled away.

“I reject you,” he said flatly, “on this day, I, Barry Thomas, heir to the Greymoon Beta family, reject you, Maya stone, as my mate.”

He stared, just as I felt my heart ripping to shreds then he delivered the final blow.

“ You should have known I'd pick Madeline.”
