Chapter 1: The Summit
The grand hall of the Black Summit was unlike any place on earth.
It had no official address, no country claimed it, and no government admitted it existed. Yet every year, the world's most powerful criminal empires gathered beneath its roof. Drug kings, arms dealers, smugglers, syndicate bosses, and cartel leaders came together for one reason; to protect business.
No one came here looking for friendship, trust had never built an empire, but Fear had.
The crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, casting soft golden light across polished marble floors. Expensive suits replaced military uniforms, designer gowns stood where crowns once belonged, every smile in the room hid an agenda, and every handshake carried the weight of an unspoken threat.
Around the massive oval table sat the people responsible for shaping the underworld. Outside, there were hundreds of armed guards watching every entrance while inside, the silence carried more danger than gunfire.
Then the annual summit began.
Evelyn Volkov walked into the hall beside her husband, Viktor Volkov. She kept her head high and her expression calm, years of standing beside Viktor had taught her exactly how to behave. She never spoke unless spoken to, she never interrupted negotiations, She remained quiet, graceful, and invisible whenever business was discussed.
It was easier that way, the less attention she attracted, and the fewer problems followed. Her dark emerald dress flowed neatly around her figure, elegant without trying too hard. The silver ring resting on her finger caught the light as they walked.
That ring had once meant something, but now it simply reminded her of promises that had long died. Viktor didn't look at her, he rarely did anymore.
He walked ahead with the confidence of a man who believed the world belonged to him, his tailored black suit fit perfectly, and his cold grey eyes scanned the room with calculated precision.
When the guards behind them stopped at the entrance, Only Viktor and Evelyn continued forward. Several cartel leaders rose briefly from their seats to acknowledge Viktor before sitting again. Respect wasn't given freely in this room; It had been earned through blood.
Evelyn greeted a few familiar faces with a polite nod, Some returned the gesture, while others didn't. She noticed it immediately, something felt different.
Normally, conversations filled the hall before meetings officially started. Men laughed over expensive whiskey, rivals exchanged careful jokes while pretending not to hate each other. But today, the room felt strangely restrained, too quiet.
A man from the eastern syndicate glanced at her before quickly looking away, another woman seated near the Italian delegation lowered her eyes the moment Evelyn met her gaze. Two leaders whispered to each other, they stopped talking as she approached; Evelyn frowned almost invisibly, she was worried.. had something happened?
She searched Viktor's face for an answer, nothing. His expression remained unreadable. She told herself she was imagining things. Perhaps negotiations had already turned difficult or maybe everyone was simply nervous, but still.. Evelyn was bothered.
The strange feeling refused to disappear, as Viktor took his seat, Evelyn stood behind him as she always had. She folded her hands neatly in front of her; Invisible, silent and waiting as usual.
Across the room, hidden among invited observers and trusted advisors, one pair of eyes never left her. The man stood near one of the tall windows overlooking the dark sea beyond the estate.
Unlike everyone else, he wasn't pretending not to watch her. His attention remained fixed on Evelyn with quiet patience. Not desire, not pity or curiosity, as though he had spent years searching for something and had finally found it.
Evelyn felt it, the strange sensation of being watched settled over her shoulders. Her eyes lifted, for only a second, their gazes met. But the man didn't smile, he didn't nod. He simply continued watching; before she could study him further, another guest stepped between them.
When the path cleared again, he was looking elsewhere. Evelyn slowly looked away, she didn't recognize him. That should have comforted her, but Instead, it unsettled her.
Then the meeting officially began.
One after another, leaders discussed shipping routes, border disputes, security arrangements, and new alliances. Numbers replaced emotions, Profit outweighed loyalty, Lives were measured by percentages.
Evelyn had attended enough summits to know every discussion followed the same pattern. She listened without truly hearing. Her thoughts wandered elsewhere. Far away from this room, far away from Viktor.
There had been a time when she believed their marriage could become real. She had been young enough to mistake kindness for affection. Strong enough to believe patience could change a person, she had spent years waiting, years convincing herself tomorrow would be different.Tomorrow never came.
Eventually she stopped hoping, she just simply existed beside him, as a wife by title and nothing more. If someone had offered her freedom without asking for anything in return… She would have accepted it without hesitation. No hesitation, no regret, she wanted out. She had wanted out for longer than anyone knew, the only reason she remained was because leaving Viktor Volkov was never as simple as walking away.
People who abandoned powerful men usually disappeared…Sometimes quietly, sometimes painfully or either ways but they were never seen again.
"Evelyn."
Viktor's voice pulled her back to the present.
She looked at him immediately. "Yes, Viktor?" Evelyn answered softly.
He didn't respond, Instead he slowly stood from his chair; The movement drew every eye in the room. Conversations stopped, glasses were lowered onto tables and silence settled once again.
Viktor buttoned his jacket before speaking, "As many of you know," Viktor said evenly, "our organizations survive because we adapt."
Nobody dared interrupt him.
"We remove weaknesses before they become threats."
Evelyn remained standing behind him, his words sounded like the beginning of another business announcement. Nothing unusual, then as Viktor turned toward her; His expression didn't change, not even slightly.
"My marriage," Viktor continued, "has become one of those weaknesses."
For the first time in years… Evelyn forgot how to breathe. No one moved, no one spoke. Every leader watched quietly almost as though…They had expected this.
Viktor extended his hand toward her.."Evelyn." He called her name,
She looked at him, Slowly..she placed her hand into his..His fingers were wrapped around hers without warning… He slid her wedding ring from her finger. The small piece of silver rested in his palm. So simple, so effortless. lol; Years of marriage reduced to one silent movement.
"This marriage ends today," Viktor announced.. His voice remained calm, cold, and professional.
"As of this moment, Evelyn no longer carries the Volkov name."
A quiet murmur spread through the room before disappearing just as quickly, no one challenged him, no one questioned his decision, Powerful people rarely explained themselves, they simply acted.
One of the side doors opened, and a woman stepped inside. She was tall, elegant and confident. She wore a fitted ivory suit that contrasted sharply against the dark room. Unlike Evelyn, she walked directly toward Viktor without hesitation.
She stopped beside him, then Viktor looked at the room.
"This is Isabella."
His voice carried clearly across the hall, "She will stand beside me from now on."
Isabella offered the gathering a composed smile, not warm, not cruel. She was simply certain of her place and she didn't even glance at Evelyn, not once. Almost as though Evelyn had already ceased to exist.
The silence inside the hall became almost unbearable, Evelyn lowered her eyes to the hand that no longer wore a ring. The pale mark around her finger remained and it was proof that something had once belonged there. She expected anger, she expected humiliation.
But instead...
She felt strangely empty, perhaps because this moment had been dying for years. Today was simply the day that everyone else noticed. Then Viktor closed his hand around the ring.
"Escort her out," he ordered without emotion.
Two guards stepped forward immediately,
"Yes, Boss," one of the guards replied.
Neither man touched Evelyn, They simply stood beside her, waiting. Evelyn lifted her head, She looked around the hall one final time. Every face remained silent.
Some avoided her eyes, Some watched with detached curiosity. Not one person objected, not one person spoke her name..But she understood why.
No one survived long by opposing Viktor Volkov in public. Without saying a word, Evelyn turned toward the exit. Her heels echoed softly against the marble floor as each step carried her farther from the life she had known.
Just before reaching the doors, she felt it again. Someone’s watching, She looked across the hall. The mysterious man stood exactly where he had been before; His eyes met hers but unlike everyone else, he didn't look away.
There was no mockery in his expression, no sympathy either, only quiet interest. As though this moment mattered for reasons only he understood. Before Evelyn could make sense of it, the doors opened. She was escorted out.
The heavy doors closed behind her with a deep, final sound. Inside, the summit continued as if nothing important had happened.
Outside, Evelyn stood in the cold night air, no longer a Volkov. It was as if her last hope had been sucked out of her. She didn't know where she would go, she didn't know what tomorrow would bring and she had no idea that somewhere inside that hall, one man had just begun watching the next move of a woman the entire underworld believed had become worthless.
