The Fall of the Empire

The deafening sound of shattering glass against the marble floor was the only thing that broke the deathly silence of the De la Vega mansion.

Valeria startled on the velvet sofa, dropping the fashion magazine she was mindlessly flipping through. It was two in the morning. Her father, Rodrigo de la Vega, never arrived at such hours. And he certainly never entered the house making such noise. He was a man of precise composure, immaculate suits, and old-school manners.

"Dad?" she called out, standing up. The silk of her cream-colored robe brushed against her ankles as she hurried toward the foyer.

What she found when she arrived made her blood run cold.

Rodrigo was leaning against the heavy oak door, as if the weight of the world had just crushed him. At his feet lay the shattered remains of a crystal glass. His tie was undone, hanging limply around his neck; his hair, always gelled back, looked disheveled, and his face... his face was the color of ash.

"Dad, what happened?" Valeria rushed toward him, catching his arm just before his knees buckled. He smelled of stale tobacco and cold sweat. He smelled of pure fear.

"It's over, Valeria," he whispered in a broken voice, a sad shadow of the authoritative baritone that used to close multimillion-dollar deals. "It's all over."

She frowned, trying to process his words as she helped him walk toward the main living room.

"What are you talking about? Was it the merger with the Asian investors? I told you not to worry, we can sell the summer house in the Hamptons if we need liquidity..."

Rodrigo let out a dry, bitter laugh devoid of any humor. He sank onto the sofa, burying his trembling hands in his face.

"There is no summer house, Valeria. There are no shares. There are no Swiss accounts." He parted his fingers to look at her with bloodshot eyes. "There is nothing. I've lost everything."

Valeria felt a sharp ringing in her ears.

"Everything? That's impossible. We're the De la Vegas. Our fortune goes back generations..."

"I gambled it away," he confessed in a whisper that hit Valeria harder than a slap. "I was desperate. The debts were piling up, the banks were shutting their doors... I needed a stroke of luck. One last play to save the company."

Valeria took a step back, horrified. Her father was not a gambler; he was a conservative businessman.

"You gambled away... our estate?" she asked, her voice choked with shock.

"Against him. I thought I could beat him. I thought he was just an arrogant nouveau riche, a lucky stray dog..." Rodrigo ran his hands through his hair, agitated. "But he knew every move I was going to make. He played with me like a cat with a dying mouse."

"Who, Dad? Who took everything?"

Rodrigo looked up. In his eyes was a primitive terror.

"Dante Volkov."

The name landed in the room like a death sentence. Valeria felt an icy shiver run down her spine. Everyone in high society knew Volkov, though no one dared invite him into their parlors. They called him "The Iron Wolf." An unpredictable man who had emerged from obscurity, devouring bankrupt companies and destroying family legacies almost for sport. They said he had no soul, that his methods were ruthless, and that ice ran through his veins.

"Volkov..." she repeated, swallowing hard. "Fine. We'll call the lawyers first thing in the morning. We'll file for bankruptcy, sell this house, and move into a small apartment. We can start from scratch, Dad. We're in this together."

Rodrigo shook his head, a pair of tears beginning to roll down his lined cheeks.

"You don't understand, sweetheart. It wasn't a legal bet. It was... a private agreement. If I don't pay before noon tomorrow, they won't just take the mansion. I'll go to prison for embezzlement. He has the proof, Valeria. He holds my entire life in the palm of his hand."

The ground seemed to open up beneath her feet. Prison. Her father, a sixty-year-old man with a heart condition, wouldn't survive a week locked up.

"How much?" she asked, clenching her jaw. "How much does he want to leave you alone? I'll sell my jewelry, my car, everything in my name."

"He doesn't want money," Rodrigo said, his voice dropping so low Valeria had to lean in to hear him. "I offered him everything I had left. I begged him. I told him I would leave you without an inheritance just to settle the debt."

"Then what the hell does he want?"

Rodrigo looked up at his daughter, staring as if it were the last time he would ever see her. There was shame in his gaze, a guilt so profound it turned Valeria's stomach.

"He made a counteroffer. He said he would forgive the debt. That he would burn the incriminating documents and leave the mansion free of encumbrances in my name..."

"In exchange for what?" she demanded, losing what little patience she had left.

"In exchange for you."

The silence that followed was dense, suffocating. Valeria blinked, convinced she had misheard.

"What?"

"He wants you, Valeria," her father sobbed, breaking down completely. "A contract. One year. He wants you to work for him... to live under his roof. To be his... exclusive property. He said that is the only price for my freedom."

Valeria felt the air leave her lungs all at once. It wasn't a job offer or bail. It was a transaction. Dante Volkov wasn't looking for an employee; he wanted a trophy and revenge. He wanted to humiliate the great Rodrigo de la Vega by snatching away the only thing he had left intact.

"You sold me..." she whispered, as the first tears of disbelief and betrayal burned her eyes.
