The Devil's Contract

The sound of the drawer snapping shut was final, like the heavy strike of a judge's gavel pronouncing a sentence.

Valeria let go of the fountain pen, her fingers numb. She had signed. She had sold a year of her life to the man watching her from across the desk with predatory satisfaction.

"Good," Dante said, his voice stripped of any warmth. "Now that the legal formalities are taken care of, let's talk about your duties."

He stood up from his leather chair and walked slowly around the large wooden desk, stopping directly in front of her. Valeria forced herself not to step back, keeping her chin up even as her nerves twisted into knots inside.

"I'm your executive assistant," she said, clinging to what little professional dignity she had left. "I'll manage your calendar, filter your calls, and..."

Dante let out a dark laugh, cutting her off instantly.

"Executive assistant?" he repeated, as if it were the most ridiculous joke he had heard all day. "Valeria, I have three people with Harvard master's degrees fighting each other just to serve me coffee. I don't need you for that."

He leaned in close, invading her personal space until Valeria could catch the intoxicating scent of his expensive cologne mixed with subtle tobacco.

"I didn't hire you for your skills, princess. I hired you for your last name. And for your obedience."

Valeria frowned, her anger momentarily eclipsing her fear.

"Then what do you expect me to do?"

Dante began listing her duties, emphasizing each point with a firm gesture as he took another step closer.

"First: Your schedule is my schedule. If I have a meeting at three in the morning in Tokyo, you will be there. If I decide to have dinner at midnight, you will pour my wine. There are no office hours. There are no weekends. Your time belongs entirely to me."

Valeria swallowed hard.

"That's illegal. Labor laws..."

"You read Clause 4," he interrupted. "You waived your labor rights in exchange for your father's debt. Next point."

Dante circled the chair where she sat. His hand deliberately brushed against her shoulder. She tensed at his touch, feeling the heat of his palm through the fabric of her jacket.

"Second: Your image. As I told you, I hate white. That Chanel suit is ridiculous. You look like a sacrificial virgin, and in my world, innocence is a weakness."

"It's a haute couture suit," she retorted, indignant.

"It's a costume," he corrected in her ear, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. "Starting tomorrow, you wear what I tell you to wear. My stylists will arrive at the penthouse first thing in the morning. My men are already at your house gathering your things; everything they bring will go through my filter. Whatever doesn't work will be thrown out. Underwear, shoes, dresses. Everything."

Valeria turned sharply in her chair to look him in the face.

"Even my underwear? That is a perverted abuse of power!"

Dante didn't flinch. His face remained an impenetrable mask of stone.

"It's control, Valeria. I want you to remember who you work for every single time you get dressed in the morning. I don't want to see a single trace of the 'old' Valeria. That spoiled girl died the moment your father lost that bet."

He stepped away and walked over to a glass credenza lined with decanters and various gadgets. He picked up a sleek, matte-black smartphone and dropped it onto Valeria's lap.

"Third: Communication. Give me your phone."

Valeria grabbed her handbag off the floor and instinctively clutched it to her chest.

"What? No. I have my contacts, my photos, my life..."

"Give it to me," Dante ordered, extending his hand, palm up. He didn't raise his voice, but the authority radiating from him was absolute. "Or the deal is off, and I call the police right now."

With eyes misty from tears of rage, Valeria rummaged through her bag, pulled out her iPhone, and placed it in his hand. Dante didn't even glance at the screen; he simply tossed it into the metal trash can beside his desk with a dull thud.

"That one," he pointed to the black phone on her lap, "is your new number. It has only one saved contact: me. It has 24/7 GPS tracking enabled. If you try to leave the city, I'll know. If you try to contact the press, I'll know. If you try to reach out to your old country club friends, it will be blocked."

Valeria stared at the device as if it were a threat waiting to explode. She was isolated. Completely alone in the wolf's den.

"Why?" she whispered, looking up at him. Her brown eyes burned with a mix of fear and defiance. "Why are you doing this, Dante? Do you hate me this much just because I didn't want to go out with you when you were sixteen? Is that it? A wounded teenage ego?"

The temperature in the office seemed to plunge instantly.

Dante closed the distance in two quick strides, trapping her between his arms and the back of her chair. He planted both hands on the armrests, boxing her in. His face was inches from hers, and Valeria could see a true tempest brewing in his grey eyes.

"Don't play naive, Valeria," he growled, his intensity stealing her breath away. "It wasn't just a 'rejection.' You and your group of friends treated me like a dog. You humiliated me that night, laughed at me as you threw me out into the street, and ruined my family. You made me believe I was worth nothing."

He paused, breathing heavily, as if holding back a grudge nurtured for years.

"Now, I have the power. And I am going to teach you what it feels like to be nobody. You are going to be my shadow, Valeria. You are going to watch me run all of this while you can only look on and obey. And when the year is up... when I have proven to you who is in charge... then, and only then, will you be free to leave."

He pulled back abruptly, as if physical proximity repulsed him. He adjusted his shirt cuffs, regaining his composure in seconds.

"Go to the elevator. My driver will take you to the penthouse."

Valeria stood up, feeling dizzy from the tension.

"And you?"

Dante sat back down at his desk and opened a corporate folder, ignoring her completely.

"I have work to do. Don't wait up for me. Oh, and Valeria..."

She paused by the private elevator door, her hand hovering over the touch panel.

"Don't try to run," he said without looking up. "My guards aren't as patient as I am."

Valeria stepped into the elevator, feeling the space shrink around her. As the cabin descended, she looked at her reflection in the polished metal mirror. She was still wearing her white suit, but she already felt stripped of everything.

The cage had closed. And the key was in Dante Volkov's pocket.
