Chapter 5

The trending topic knew exactly how to start a fire.

#BiancaMooreBelatedBrideCoverLeak#

The photo showed Bianca standing at the entrance of a photo studio.

In her arms, she was holding a wedding dress garment bag.

You couldn't see the full dress, but I recognized that silver butterfly clasp on the bag instantly.

It was my Belated.

Tara burst into my office, her face completely pale.

"Claire, the dress is gone!"

I was in the middle of emailing my lawyer. My hands paused.

"Since when?"

"Last night. The bridal boutique said Mr. Christian's driver picked it up with an authorization form. They said you approved it."

She shoved her phone at me.

It was the driver's sign-out log.

On the authorizing signature line, it read: Christian Van Ness.

I stared at those two words. And then, I laughed.

Wonderful.

He couldn't even be bothered to maintain the surface-level pretense of respecting me.

My phone rang.

It was Christian.

I answered it and didn't speak.

He spoke first. "I had someone pick up the dress. You'll get it back after the shoot."

His voice was still so calm, like he was discussing the weather.

Like yesterday's argument had just been me throwing an irrational tantrum.

"Who gave permission?" I asked him.

"I did."

"And what gives you that right?"

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

"Claire, we're married. My decision is your decision."

I gripped the phone. I suddenly remembered the coffee he handed me the day we signed our marriage papers.

City Hall had been crowded that day. I was so nervous my palms were sweating.

He said, "From now on, you have me."

So his idea of "having him" wasn't holding an umbrella for me.

It was holding authority over me.

I let out a soft laugh.

"Christian, remember this sentence."

"What?"

"The moment you took that dress, we stopped being husband and wife."

His tone finally turned cold.

"You're going to divorce me over a piece of clothing?"

I looked at the divorce agreement spread open on the desk.

Property division. Equity ownership. Joint marital debts. Every clause laid out with absolute clarity.

I said, "It's not about a piece of clothing."

It was about me.

"I've already sent the agreement to your email. Sign it within three days. If not, we'll settle this in court."
