Chapter 4
The London lab was on the south bank of the Thames. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sky was a gray-blue, completely different from the harsh white glare of the Bay Area.
I liked it.
By the fifth day in London, I was in the lab working past 8 p.m. when my phone rang. A video call from my best friend, Rachel. I hesitated for a second, then picked up.
Rachel's face appeared on the screen, her brows knit tight.
"Valerie. Do you know what your husband is doing?"
"What do you mean?"
"Brandon posted on Facebook. Said you've been away on a work trip for days and he can't reach you, that he's really 'concerned' about you." She hooked quotation marks in the air with her fingers. "All his tech bros swarmed the comments section. One said, 'She's probably off having a good time with some Euro guy.' Another said, 'I heard she's been working late a lot lately, heh.'"
No expression on my face.
"What else?"
Rachel's voice dropped lower.
"Your mother-in-law. She flew into the Bay Area yesterday. Went straight to your parents' house."
The pipette in my hand stopped.
"She sat down on the front lawn and started screaming abuse. Called you scum. Said you're the most selfish person alive, that you ruined the Foster family name."
Rachel's voice was shaking.
"Your mom almost fainted on the spot. Your dad had heart bypass surgery less than a year ago, and she stood outside his door screaming for a full twenty minutes."
My fist clenched.
"How are they?"
"Your mom called me crying. Asking if I knew where you were. I didn't say anything. Valerie—what's your next move?"
"Divorce."
Three seconds of silence.
"Finally. It's about damn time."
