Chapter 1

My sister and I chose our mounts at the same time.

She claimed the purebred, noble, and serene spirit tiger, leaving me with the wild spirit snake—its lineage impure and its temper fierce.

Who would have thought that during its ascension, the spirit tiger would turn on its master, leaving my sister disfigured and her cultivation destroyed?

Meanwhile, the spirit snake transformed into a true dragon, ascending to the status of a divine beast. I basked in glory and admiration.

I went to visit my sister. She had gone mad. In her insanity, she detonated her own spiritual core, dragging me to death alongside her.

When I awoke, I had returned to the moment of choosing our mounts. This time, my sister snatched the spirit snake.

She sneered at me. “This worthless spirit tiger is yours. Now you can taste what it feels like to be disfigured.”

I smiled. Why would I risk my life fighting for resources when I could live a peaceful life soothing the spirit tiger’s spiritual sense effortlessly?

Humming a cheerful tune, I brought the spirit tiger home and buried my face into its warm, soft belly.

Its rough, sturdy tail coiled around my leg.

“You’re mine, sweetheart,” it murmured.

The moment my sister eagerly chose the spirit snake, I knew she had been reborn as well.

Two luminous orbs, one bright and one dim, rested in a special circular contraption. They represented the spirit tiger and the spirit snake.

Mounts were powerful but lacked intelligence, while humans were the opposite. Mounts needed their spiritual senses combed by humans, and humans needed the strength of mounts to forge mutually beneficial contracts with the ancients. This tradition endured through the ages.

Of course, a mount’s lineage and talent were critical. The purer the bloodline, the broader its spiritual sense and the lower its risk of going rogue. Greater innate talent meant greater power and higher potential realms of ascension.

In my previous life, my sister chose the spirit tiger without hesitation, leaving the spirit snake for me.

She had covered her mouth with a delicate laugh, proud as she looked at me. “Dear sister, you’ve spent so much time with the spirit snake, it’s probably grown attached to you. I wouldn’t dream of taking that away from you.

"As for the spirit tiger? Naturally, it belongs with me.”

Now, she clutched the spirit snake greedily, though she pretended to act magnanimous. “This spirit tiger is better suited for you, dear sister.”

“Elena!” Father exclaimed, his face filled with disapproval.

He had always favored her.

Although I was exceptionally gifted, reaching the Golden Core stage at a young age—a cultivation speed rivaling high-tier mounts—I had never been his first choice. I was the obvious candidate to bond with the spirit snake, but my sister had refused to allow it. She feared I might surpass her with the only high-tier mount in the family.

Father indulged her, delaying me for three years.

Eventually, he cashed in a family favor, humbling himself to request the spirit tiger clan’s young master for me—a mount with both pure bloodline and exceptional talent.

With the spirit tiger as a peace offering, my sister begrudgingly allowed me to bond with the spirit snake, its lineage flawed and temperament wild.

The clan had already grumbled about Father’s bias. To appease them, he arranged a formal mount selection ceremony.

Now, he couldn’t understand why my sister, always determined to outshine me, would willingly choose the volatile, impure-blooded spirit snake, leaving the seemingly superior spirit tiger to me.

“The spirit snake may be talented, but its impure bloodline makes it prone to going astray. Its temperament is aggressive and hard to tame. Elena, think carefully. The spirit tiger’s pure bloodline and gentle nature make it more suitable for you.”

Every word carried Father’s deep, unconditional love for his daughter.

He seemed to forget that I was his daughter, too.

My sister shook her head firmly. “I want the spirit snake.”

She leaned close to Father’s ear and whispered something softly.

With a helpless sigh, Father gazed at her dotingly. “Fine. I’ll back you up.”

She tugged at his hand playfully, like a child seeking reassurance.

I stood to the side, watching coldly, feeling like nothing more than a clown.

Father gave her a fond look before reverting to his authoritative demeanor as head of the family. “Renee, step forward. Your sister chose the spirit snake for your sake. With your talent and the spirit tiger as your mount, it’s only fair for you to make some concessions.

“Give up three-tenths of your resources to help your sister raise her mount. Consider it compensation.”

In my previous life, when I got the spirit snake, no one had ever suggested compensating me with three-tenths of anything.

I looked up to see my sister smiling triumphantly at me.

She already had Father’s favor and access to his private treasury. Why was she so fixated on my three-tenths?

“Sorry, I refuse,” I replied.

“Why are you being so stingy?” Father snapped impatiently. “Your sister made such a big sacrifice, and you’re still so willful!”
