The proposal that Changed my Life

Ella Thompson wiped her hands on the apron and glanced nervously at the pile of invoices stacked on her desk. Her small design studio smelled faintly of fabric and fresh coffee—a comforting scent that reminded her why she had chosen this path, even if it hadn’t exactly been kind to her bank account. She had been working late again, as usual, trying to finish sketches for a new clothing line she barely had the funds to produce.

“Just one more client meeting,” she muttered to herself, staring at the email from a potential investor. If this deal went through, it could save her family’s finances—and possibly allow her to finally open the boutique she had dreamed about for years.

Of course, that was assuming the client actually cared about her designs and not just the numbers attached to them.

Her phone buzzed, interrupting her spiraling thoughts. A message from her best friend, Maya, popped up:

“Ella! Stop stressing. You deserve better than staring at invoices all night. Go have a life!”

Ella chuckled softly, her shoulders relaxing slightly. “One day, Maya. One day.”

Before she could respond, the door to the studio opened with a sharp click, and the faint scent of expensive cologne invaded the room. She looked up—and froze.

The man standing in the doorway was tall, impossibly handsome, and radiated power in a way that made the room feel smaller. Dark hair perfectly styled, crisp suit, and eyes so sharp they seemed to cut straight through her. He was—without exaggeration—the kind of man who could command a room without saying a single word.

And she recognized him immediately.

“Lucas Sterling,” she whispered under her breath, unable to hide the awe in her voice.

He stepped inside without asking, as if the room belonged to him. “Ms. Thompson,” he said, his deep voice calm but with an edge of authority. “I assume you’ve received my invitation to the Sterling Gala tomorrow evening.”

Ella swallowed, trying to calm the nervous flutter in her chest. “Y-yes, Mr. Sterling. I… I did.”

Lucas’s dark eyes swept over the sketches scattered across her desk, lingering on the fabric samples. “Impressive work. Your designs are… detailed. Precise.” There was a pause, and a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “But I’m more interested in your ability to handle pressure.”

Ella blinked, unsure if it was a compliment or a warning. “I… work well under pressure.”

He nodded once, almost imperceptibly, and then crossed the room to stand near her desk. He didn’t sit, didn’t touch anything—he simply observed. “I hear you’re in a difficult position financially. That your family is… struggling.”

Her stomach knotted. How did he—?

“I have ways of helping,” he continued, his tone neutral but sharp, the kind that made her sit straighter without realizing it. “But it requires cooperation. From you.”

Ella frowned. “Cooperation?”

“Yes,” Lucas said, taking a slow step closer. “A business arrangement. A partnership. A marriage, technically.”

Her jaw dropped. “Marriage?”

“Yes. Fake, of course,” he clarified, his eyes scanning her reaction like a hawk watching prey. “But legally binding. Temporary. For appearances. It would solve several… complications in my professional dealings.”

Ella’s mind went blank. She stared at him, certain she had misheard. “You… want me to marry you?”

He didn’t smile, didn’t blink. “I want you to marry me.”

She laughed nervously, shaking her head. “I’m sorry, this has to be a joke. A very elaborate joke.”

“No joke,” Lucas said evenly. “I’m quite serious. And before you panic, consider the benefits. Your family’s debts can be cleared immediately. Your designs would gain exposure in high society. And, of course, nothing else is required beyond appearances. You continue your life. I continue mine. The public sees a perfect couple. That’s all.”

Ella’s mind raced. Her family… her debts… her struggling studio… this could solve everything. And yet, the sheer audacity of the man standing in front of her, asking her to step into a marriage she didn’t want, left her stunned.

“This is insane,” she whispered, almost to herself.

Lucas’s gaze softened slightly, almost imperceptibly. “Life is often more absurd than we expect. You can either let it overwhelm you, or you can take advantage of the opportunity. Think carefully, Ms. Thompson. You have until tomorrow night to decide.”

With that, he turned sharply and left, leaving her in stunned silence, heart hammering.

Ella sank into her chair, staring at the empty doorway. Her first instinct was to laugh. Out loud. Crazy? Absolutely. Impossible? Maybe. But the seed of possibility had been planted.

Her phone buzzed again. Maya’s text appeared:

“Ella… what’s wrong? You sound like you’re about to faint.”

Ella typed back shakily, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you…”

And she didn’t. Not yet.

The rest of the night passed in a blur of sketches, half-drunk coffee, and a mind spinning with what-ifs. Could she really do it? Marry a man she barely knew, even temporarily? Could she live with the constant public scrutiny, the whispers behind polished smiles? And why did the thought of being near him again make her heart race in ways she couldn’t explain?

The next morning, Ella sat at her tiny kitchen table, staring blankly at a stack of bills. Her mother had always told her life required bold moves—but this was a leap from which she couldn’t see a safe landing.

Maya burst in without knocking, her usual cheer brightening the cramped apartment. “Okay, spill it! What happened last night? You’ve been texting in code all morning!”

Ella hesitated, then sighed. “He… he wants me to marry him.”

Maya froze mid-step, eyebrows shooting up. “Wait. Who? And… marry him? Are you serious?”

“I’m deadly serious,” Ella admitted, running a hand through her hair. “Lucas Sterling. The billionaire CEO. He… he wants a fake marriage.”

Maya’s mouth fell open. “Are you kidding me? That’s… that’s insane! Why would you—”

“Because,” Ella cut her off, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and reluctant hope, “it’s the only way to save my family. The only way my designs even have a chance. It’s ridiculous, and I hate myself for even considering it—but… it might work.”

Maya paused, taking it in. Then, with a dramatic sigh, she grabbed Ella by the shoulders. “Okay, first of all, breathe. Second, yes—it’s ridiculous. But… it might also be the best thing that ever happens to you. Think about it. Billionaire husband, exposure for your designs… heck, you might even end up liking him.”

Ella laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “Liking him? He barely spoke two sentences to me without sounding like he was judging my entire life.”

Maya smirked. “Exactly. That’s chemistry waiting to happen.”

Ella groaned. “Maya, please. This isn’t a rom-com. This is my life.”

Yet, even as she said it, a small, irrational part of her couldn’t deny the strange pull Lucas had on her. Something in his presence—sharp, commanding, impossibly confident—made her pulse quicken. She hated that it affected her, but she couldn’t ignore it either.

By midday, Ella found herself walking through the busy streets of the city, phone in hand, re-reading Lucas’s email with the terms of the proposed arrangement. The words “fake marriage” blurred before her eyes. She stopped outside a boutique she admired, pressing her forehead to the glass and staring at the luxurious displays inside. Could she actually step into this world? Could she live under his scrutiny and keep her independence intact?

Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft buzz in her pocket. A call. Unknown number.

“Ms. Thompson?” The voice was smooth, low, and entirely too familiar.

“Yes?” Her heart lurched.

“This is Lucas Sterling. Consider this a follow-up. I’ll be expecting your decision by tomorrow night. Do not underestimate the importance of timing.”

Ella bit her lip, staring at the pavement. “I… I understand,” she whispered, her stomach twisting.

After she hung up, she leaned against the wall, her mind racing. Everything in her life had been leading to this moment—or at least, it felt that way. One decision could change everything: her family’s future, her career, even her heart.

Could she do it? Could she marry a man she barely knew, just to save the people she loved—and maybe herself in the process?

The city lights began to glow as evening approached, reflecting off the glass buildings like tiny sparks of possibility. Ella closed her eyes, letting herself imagine it: the gala, the dress, the moments with Lucas Sterling…

And a tiny, foolish thought crept into her mind: What if this isn’t just about the money? What if… it’s something more?

Her eyes snapped open. No. She shook her head. Focus. Survival first. Everything else… could wait.

Tomorrow night, she would make her choice.

And with that, the first step into a life she never imagined—into a fake marriage with the CEO—was set.
