Chapter 5

My heart sank violently. It took a long time before I could force the word out of my throat. "Okay."

This place had been my home for three years, but now, I was formally forbidden from ever stepping inside again.

Seeing how readily I agreed, Julian softened his tone. His sharp features relaxed just a fraction as he looked down at me.

"Be good," he said. "You liked that locket at the auction, didn't you? I had Larry find a very similar Victorian antique. I'll have him drop it off for you later."

He spoke with the casual dismissal of a man accustomed to buying silence, then hurried away before I could reply.

My refusal caught in my throat, eventually dissolving into a bitter smile. I knew this was Julian's version of compensation. He thought every loss had a price tag.

However, my mother's heirloom was one of a kind. No matter how similar the substitute was, it wasn't the same piece. It was just like the way Julian treated me. No matter how well he provided for me, it would never be love.

I packed my clothes, folding the silks and linens into my suitcase. Just before I stepped through the front door, I couldn't help but steal one last look at the villa.

With its somber gray and black tones and minimalist interior decor, the house looked cold. I realized there wasn't a single trace of a "home" left in that space.

I gripped the handle of my luggage and walked away, the wheels clicking against the pavement as I left it all behind.
