Chapter 1

Elliot knew very well that his Alpha husband didn't love him, and even despised him.

But to truly experience this feeling was at this very moment when he blankly sat outside the hospital, holding the "nutritional supplements" that his husband, Julian, so generously bought for him.

They had been married for four years, and recently, his family, the Sterling family, had been pressuring him to have a child. Elliot wondered if Julian would pay more attention to him if they had a child together.

According to Elliot's actions, he should have already had Julian's child a long time ago, but he never did. He went to the hospital alone for a check-up, and the doctor, holding the examination report, stared at him strangely, asking why he had been taking contraceptive pills for so long.

Confused, Elliot denied taking any contraceptive pills, wondering if there had been a mistake. The doctor assured him that there wasn't, and asked if he had been taking any medication. At that moment, Elliot thought about the "nutritional supplements" Julian had bought for him, which he had been taking every day.

He thought Julian had bought them to care for his health, so he took them daily. He showed them to the doctor, and when the test results came out, he asked hopefully, "My husband said these are nutritional supplements."

The doctor responded, "These are contraceptive pills specially for Omegas, very potent. How long have you been taking them?"

Elliot hesitated before saying, "...four years."

"How long have you been married?"

"...four years."

The doctor looked at him with pity, saying, "Stop taking the pills now, take care of your body, and there may still be hope."

Elliot knew he wouldn't be able to have children in the future.

Omegas like Elliot, with a bad reputation, were not supposed to marry someone like Julian, but they had an agreement from their parents since they were young.

Four years ago, Julian was about to go to the front lines, and everyone thought he would die in battle. It was to make his parents and the entire Hawthorne family loosen their grip on him that he hastily married Elliot.

Elliot followed him to the battlefield.

The days at the front lines were really tough, but two years later, Julian returned with military honors, gaining fame and becoming a very important figure in the Empire.

The better Julian became, the more apparent it was that his Omega was not worthy of him.

And indeed, it was true. Elliot was sent to a reformatory at the age of sixteen for injuring someone, he was worthless, indulgent, and spoiled, just a shell of a person.

Elliot sat in the corridor, holding his head in his hands, remembering when Julian had said he surely wouldn't let his child have a mother like Elliot.

He thought it was just an angry statement at the time, not realizing that Julian had never intended to have children with him from the beginning.

When Elliot left the hospital, a family of three passed by him, and he looked at a little girl with braided hair sitting on an Alpha's shoulder, sweetly saying she didn't want the shot, while an Omega next to her comforted her tenderly.

Elliot looked at them with envy, realizing that he might never have the opportunity for a family like that.

When he got home, he saw Julian's shoes at the doorstep, indicating that Julian had returned from his business trip.

After arranging the examination report, Elliot took out the coat to send for dry cleaning, and then noticed a sweet and alluring scent on it, belonging to another Omega. Elliot stood there in shock.

His mind went blank, and he knew that Julian had a lover, and they had even been intimate in front of him. He thought his heart had become numb a long time ago, but he felt real pain, shaking and feeling sick to his stomach.

He had tried to stir things up before, and had even attempted suicide to cling onto this marriage, but Julian had simply said, "Let's just get a divorce." It was as casual as discussing what sauce to have with breakfast, showing that the marriage had no significance to Julian.

This precarious marriage had always been a burden to Julian. Only Elliot was still foolishly holding on, thinking that time would change things, but Julian would never love him.

Elliot could only watch as his husband drifted further and further away, feeling his spirit being worn down.

He had considered divorce, but quickly dismissed the thought.

What was he thinking? He had no choice.

It took some time for Elliot to tidy up the house since they didn't hire anyone to do the chores, since Elliot didn't have a job and usually stayed at home. After preparing dinner, Julian woke up and came out of the room.

Julian was dressed in solid-colored loungewear, with his unkempt hair falling over his forehead. His cold lips fit his stern and aloof demeanor. They hadn't seen each other for a long time, and there was no expression on his face as he passed Elliot to wash his hands, acting more like a stranger than a spouse.

Elliot looked at him in a daze, then lowered his head to eat without saying a word. Elliot would often try to make conversation during meals, asking about Julian's work or other things, but Julian would simply raise an eyebrow and say, "No talking during meals."

His words were always so cold.

Elliot sulkily fell silent.

Before he got married, Elliot couldn't cook at all. When they were in the army, Julian would rarely come home to eat with him, often going to the canteen instead. So Elliot started learning to cook, cutting his hands and splashing oil on himself countless times before he got the hang of it.

He thought his efforts would move this man, but Julian's heart was as cold as ice. After all these years, his opinion of Elliot remained unchanged.

After dinner, Elliot remembered his father Theodore Sterling's request and finally gathered the courage to ask Julian, "Shouldn't we have a child?"

Julian was about to leave, but upon hearing Elliot's words, he smirked mockingly and turned to look at him, "Do you think I would let my child have a mother like you? Or is this another trick because you don't want to get divorced?"

Elliot felt as though he had been slapped in the face by Julian's expression. Julian had always looked at him that way. His head was empty, filled with lies, and Julian clearly hated him. If it weren't for the Sterling family, with his personality, he would have killed Elliot a long time ago.

In their second year of marriage, Julian had mentioned divorce, and Elliot had begged successfully to make him forget it. The second time, Julian had been very determined, and Elliot had directly attempted suicide, ending up in the hospital, even alarming Julian's grandmother, Mrs. Hawthorne, so they didn't got through with the divorce.

Elliot had thought everything would be okay as long as he tried to make Julian see his good side, proving that he was not insignificant, and that he would accept him. But the events that followed proved his stupidity. He thought that his relentless efforts would bring about change, but he only ended up making himself more detestable.

Julian sized Elliot up, knowing that he had guessed correctly, "After grandma's birthday, we'll go ahead and get divorced."

Elliot reached out to grab Julian, shaking his head, "Julian, we've been doing well recently, haven't we? I won't be as ignorant as before, and I won't interfere with you. Can't we stay married?"

Julian suddenly pushed Elliot away with great force, causing Elliot to fall to the ground. Julian grabbed his collar and glared at him fiercely, "Haven't you had enough of these tricks? If you want to seek death again, remember to go far away, so I don't have to see it."

With that, Julian let him go and left without a second glance.

Elliot watched his receding back, fingers touching the cold floor, feeling like the day had become colder than winter.

He looked at the scars on his wrist, remnants from the last time he had cut himself, and suddenly put on a bitter smile.

Back then, he hadn't really wanted to die. He had planned his actions carefully, using the right amount of force, making sure everyone would see him in his pitiful state, just to garner sympathy.

But the pain was real.

It was his own fault.

Even the reason Julian had marked him in the first place was because he had drugged Julian while he was delirious. The first time had been real pain, but Elliot also tasted a hint of sweetness in his suffering. When Julian woke up, he almost killed him.

At that time, Elliot had done everything in his power to make Julian fall in love with him, and now he had to swallow the bitter fruit of his actions.

He just hadn't expected Julian to hate him so much, that Julian not only didn't want him to get pregnant, but also wanted to ruin his body.

Julian knew exactly how to hurt him, with just a few words or a glance. But this time, Elliot had finally lost the strength to get up after clutching his wounds.

He thought, if he hadn't fallen hopelessly in love with Julian after he saved him on the front lines, and if he had just seen him as a political alliance, maybe everything would have been different.
