Chapter 4 All Three of Us Thought We Had Been Betrayed

Mireya's POV

The air in the study felt heavy enough to crush me.

I stood beside the coffee table and watched Raffaele turn his wedding band slowly beneath his fingertips. The gold caught the light from the desk lamp, cold and bright against the divorce papers beneath it.

Five years of marriage reduced to a ring on top of a contract.

Nerio was still outside the half-open door.I could feel his eyes on my back.

Raffaele did not look at him.

He looked only at me.

And asked the one question neither of us should have asked at the end of a marriage like ours.

Love?

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"You're asking me that now? Isn't it a little late? Five years ago,I knelt outside your door because Nerio was going to die.I offered you the only thing I had left to bargain with - myself. You talked about terms,Raffaele. Not love."

His expression did not change.

I went on,my voice shaking despite my best effort to keep it steady.

"For five years,we played husband and wife.We respected each other. We built routines. We even crossed the line and became a real married couple in every physical sense. But you know how this marriage began."

Raffaele leaned back against the leather chair.

"How it began doesn't get to define what it became."

His voice was low and rough.

"I know what I did five years ago.I knew you loved him,and I used the worst moment of your life to keep you with me anyway.I won't pretend otherwise. But I never wanted a contract,Mireya.I wanted you."

"And now you want me to reward you for that?"

I could hardly believe him.

"You watched me get pulled deeper into this family. You watched Nerio and me get trapped between what we used to be and what you made us become. You married me under a bargain, kept me here for five years, and now that the term is over, you still won't let me leave cleanly."

"Leave?"

Raffaele gave a quiet laugh with no warmth in it.

Then he stood.

His shadow swallowed mine.

He crossed the space between us,caught my chin in one hand, and forced me to look up at him.

"Hate me if you need to.Blame me for what I did.But don't stand here and erase five years with one sentence."

His thumb brushed lightly over my jaw.

"Look me in the eyes and tell me you never felt anything for me.Not once."

My heartbeat stumbled.

I hated that it did.

Because I could not say it.

Not honestly.

There had been too many nights.Too many mornings.Too many small gestures no contract had required.

The way he tied my hair back when I was tired. The way he remembered how I took my coffee. The way he reached for me in his sleep without ever waking.

Somewhere between being his student, being afraid of him, depending on him,and living beside him, something real had grown.

Something I had spent years refusing to name.

But what did that change?

"Raffaele..."

I closed my eyes.

Tears slipped down my cheeks and landed against his hand.

"Even if I did, what does it matter? We started wrong.Nerio is back. There is too much between the three of us now.Just let me go.It would be better for everyone."

A faint sound came from the hallway.

I opened my eyes.

Nerio was still there, visible through the gap in the door, watching us.

Raffaele followed my gaze.

Instead of releasing me,his arm tightened around my waist.

He lowered his face until his mouth nearly touched the corner of mine.

"I don't give up what I want,Mireya," he murmured."I didn't five years ago.I won't now."

The door swung open.

Nerio stood there holding an old airline ticket in one clenched hand.

My blood went cold.

I knew that destination.

It was the city he had fled to five years ago.

"Mireya." His voice broke around my name."You were going to come after me?"

I stared at the ticket.

The grief of that year came back so quickly it hurt to breathe.

"If you were planning to find me," Nerio said,"then why did you end up marrying him? If you still loved me,why were you the one wearing his wedding dress?"

"Because she had no other choice."

Raffaele answered for me.

He stepped to my side, placing part of his body between Nerio and me.

Nerio's face twisted.

"Shut up.I asked her."

Raffaele's expression hardened.

"Five years ago,you were wanted for murder. The Vescari family had men hunting you in more than one country. You were so proud you would rather die than ask me for help.Did you honestly think you survived all those attempts because you were simply better than everyone chasing you?"

Nerio went pale.

"What are you saying?"

"She came to me."

Silence.

Raffaele held his son's stare.

"She begged me to end the Vescari hunt and keep you alive.I told her there was one condition. She had to marry me."

Nerio's fingers opened.

The ticket slipped to the carpet.

"She didn't betray you," Raffaele said.

For a moment,Nerio looked as though every bone had been pulled out of his body.

He stared at me,then at his father.

"So if I had stopped being so damn stubborn...if I had gone to you myself...she never would have had to marry you?"

His voice cracked.

"This happened because of me? I put her in that marriage?"

"Enough."

My voice snapped through the room.

I stepped between them.

"Both of you, stop. Why does everything turn into a contest over who sacrificed more for me? Five years ago and now - you keep treating my life like something the two of you can negotiate over."

I bent down and picked up the old ticket.

"Nerio, don't turn all of this into another reason to punish yourself. That isn't accountability. That's hiding inside guilt."

Then I looked at Raffaele.

"And you can stop acting as though controlling everything was some noble act of mercy.I agreed to marry you because I wanted to save him. That was my decision. My bargain."

I closed my hand around the ticket.

"I am not evidence of which one of you loves harder. My past belongs to me.So does my present. So does whatever comes next."

I walked out.

Nerio caught up with me in the hallway.

"Mireya,wait."

His fingers closed gently around my hand this time, not hard enough to stop me if I pulled away.

"I won't ever let you beg someone else for my life again."

Raffaele's footsteps sounded behind us.

Nerio did not release me.

Instead,he lowered his head and pressed a kiss to the back of my hand.

Three rooms faced the long, dark corridor.

Raffaele at one end.

Nerio at the other.

And me in the room between them.

I pulled my hand free, went inside, and locked the door.

For the first time,I understood how badly all three of us had failed each other.

Each of us had called secrecy a sacrifice.

Each of us had believed we were protecting someone else.

And somehow, every one of those choices had become another kind of betrayal.
