Summary
Alpha Kaelen was the distraction Rowena couldn't afford— but the one her body yearned for, her soul burned for, and her wolf howled for. After a haunting vision from the moon goddess in her prison cell and the death of the only man who once called her daughter, Rowena knew one thing: she had to protect her family from Vespera—the girl they raised as one of their own—no matter the cost. But then he came. He tore down her walls with just a look. He challenged every vow she'd made to herself— and worse, he believed her when no one else did. “I can't give him my heart,” she whispered, staring up at the glowing bar sign, fists clenched. “Everyone I’ve ever trusted has turned on me.” “But he's not like them,” the fair-haired girl said gently. “He’s the Alpha of the strongest pack in the country. He chooses you. Again and again.” “My father locked me in a cell,” she bit out. “My betrothed married my sister. I don’t need love—I need justice.” She turned away, steel in her eyes. But she hadn’t gone more than three steps when she felt it— that unmistakable pull. He was already there. Watching. Waiting. And this time, he wasn’t letting her go.
Chapter 1: Monsters of my past.
There were monsters in the world, wicked and brutal monsters and I don't mean the kind you read in books or the ones in deep untouched forests that you'll never know. Monsters wear different faces and in this prison, a monster wears the face of the prison's chief guard.
"What?! I only get this weird-looking half-boiled meat for the first meal of the day?" I glared at the Chief guard fiercely.
"That's already more than you deserve" He scoffed and walked away, his bald head shiny in the almost dim light.
What a jerk! He had tricked me into solving a problem in his daughter's school project with the promise of a decent meal, again.
I closed my eyes against the bitter anger rising in my chest, I could feel my wolf in my head but there was nothing she could do as long as the locked chain remained around my neck.
I had already come to terms with my family hating me and putting me in prison for a crime I didn't commit but life was getting on my nerves, as if throwing me all the bad luck in the universe wasn't even, it doesn't even let me live in peace and when I thought trading something I had for something I needed would help, life slaps me hard across the face and reminds me that betrayal was the norm.
More than anything I understood how the world works, the bigger dog always gets the largest bone and an underdog like me has to fight and trade for bits and this terrible place never lets me forget that the bigger dog can always change the rules.
"If you don't want it, I can take it," Sana said meekly, her soft voice penetrating my thoughts, my eyes flickered to her, her big brown eyes holding a shadow of a smile. She lowered her head quickly as my gaze touched hers, she was put in prison not long ago for murdering a council elder.
The prison held the worst of the lot in the pack and somehow I must have fit the category and ended up here,
"I'm sorry," She said quietly, and my gaze softened; she was such a sweet girl that I sometimes wondered if she really killed anybody.
"You could have it if you want," I said softly; I didn't want to bully anyone like I was bullied. Anyone who didn't deserve it anyway.
"You always act so high and mighty, you think you're better than us? You think you can take all of us?" A girl said sharply, her tone laced with desperate bitterness as stared at me from across the room,
I looked at the fair skinned girl, her features were far from delicate, a scar ran from the bridge of her nose to her chin. Her face was rough with bruises. Alia.
"Yeah, wanna find out?" I stared at her calmly, my eyes revealing everything I wanted to say and she backed away.
Alia was the little gang leader who picked on me relentlessly when my father first threw me in prison, until I knocked her unconscious in a fight one year ago, and everyone just kinda left me alone since then.
I pushed the plate away towards Sana and left the table.
If I wasn't going to eat anything then I could as well get a good sleep, a guard walked me back to my tiny black cell, there was no furniture or cloth to cover myself with and I could only rely on the rats to keep my body warm on the coldest nights but that didn't stop sleep from claiming me as soon as my head touched the cold stone.
"Rowena!"
"Wake up Rowena! The awakening hour is upon us!"
My eyes popped open as the gentle but edge cutting voice pierced my sleep, I sat up and rubbed my eyes slowly, and it took me a moment to realize that I wasn't in the cold, dark cell anymore.
I was sitting in a garden with the most exquisite flowers, my hair flowed freely around my shoulders and I wasn't wearing the torn rags.
"Rowena" The voice said softly behind me, I turned in panic and froze, there's no word to describe her, calling her beautiful would be an insult. She was ethereal, she didn't feel real.
"Who are you?" I asked slowly, my breath caught in my throat.
"You don't remember, do you?" She lifted the corners of her lips and smiled, flashing me a mesmerizing smile, I stared at her with my mouth wide open staring in awe.
"Walk with me Rowena, we don't have much time" she extended her slender hand, her skin was so glassy and I was convinced she was shining. I reached out cautiously afraid this was a dream and she'd disappear if I touched her.
"Am I dead?" I said breathless.
"No, if you come with me I'll help you see everything" her eyes held a kind smile, her eyes! They looked like snow, white and still but for some reason they put me at ease, I placed my fingers in hers and hers closed around mine.
I didn't notice the change in the environment until a soft wind touched my face and I finally shifted my gaze from her, it was a dark lonely road, the sky looked gloomy and grave.
My heart skipped several beats and I clung to her tightly.
"Am I dead? Am I going to the crossroads?" My heart beat heavily as I stared back at her.
"No you're not dead, you're dreaming" She was no longer smiling but she didn't look mean either.
"Who are you? What do you want from me?" I asked in a choked voice
"I know this will scare you but if I don't show you, it won't just be fear you have to deal with in the near future, it will be doom, despair and death" Her voice sent chills up my spine.
I stared into her snowy eyes and watched as they turned red, like the blood moon.
"Look!" I tried to look away, fear engulfed me but her voice was compelling and I had no choice but to see the blood shed and fire and destruction in her eyes, my brother, being torn apart in violence.
My body froze as I saw through her eyes the accident that took me far away from my family, Vespera smiling in the destruction and mayhem. She suddenly let go of my hand and I collapsed on the cold, wet stone.
"Why?" My voice trembled, I had so many questions but she was already gone leaving only the promise of her presence in the air.
"Vespera, beware of her" her voice was like a whisper in my ear, and somehow in that moment, I knew who and what she was.
"Get up!" The sharp edge of an iron rod poking into my skin accompanied by a harsh voice woke me up from my nightmare. I rubbed my swollen eyes and my body trembled from the cold.
"You have a visitor" The mean looking guard said in a sharp tone.
I didn't know how to react so I just sat there numbly, he couldn't possibly be talking to me, no one had ever visited me in the past three years.
I walked slowly in front of the guard, partly because of the heavy chain on my wrists and ankles and also because I was still shocked by the dream, it was so vivid and I just couldn't understand what was happening.
The guard opened the heavy door and led me into the waiting room.
"There you are" The familiar voice reached my ears before I saw him.
He stood there, leaning slightly against the wall with his hands in his pants pocket, his eyes were puffy and red and his smooth handsome face didn't hold his usual boyish grin. Lucien.
"You look better than I hoped, little thief" he gave me a scornful look.
