The Man Who Came for Her
Serena’s POV:
“Charles. Step away from her. We only need the girl.”
My blood turned cold.
I knew that voice.
The same voice that had threatened my father. The same voice that had stood in my apartment while I held a knife with shaking hands. The same voice that had told me Marcus Kent had until midnight.
Charles’s grip tightened around my wrist.
“You know him?” he asked.
I couldn’t answer.
The emergency lights cast long red shadows across the hallway. Somewhere behind us, glass shattered again. Security men shouted into radios, and the sound of heavy footsteps moved through the mansion.
Then the voice came again.
“Bring Serena Kent to the front entrance, and nobody gets hurt.”
Charles looked at me.
Not Vanessa.
Not his wife.
Serena.
For the first time since I met him, I saw something in his eyes that wasn’t anger.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered.
“I know that man.”
“I know.”
“He was at my apartment.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“The man who threatened your father?”
I nodded.
A gunshot exploded somewhere downstairs.
I flinched.
Charles immediately pulled me against him and turned my body behind his.
“Move.”
He started toward the stairs.
I grabbed his arm.
“Where are you going?”
“To deal with this.”
“There are armed men inside your house.”
“I noticed.”
“You can’t just walk toward them.”
His eyes dropped to my hand around his arm.
“You’re worried about me?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Something almost like a smile touched his mouth.
“Liar.”
“Charles—”
He pulled his phone from his pocket and made a call.
“Lock down the east wing. Nobody gets through the service corridor. I want every exit covered.”
A voice answered through the phone.
“Sir, we’re already—”
“Do it.”
He ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
“You’re going to the panic room.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“Yes.”
“I am not hiding while those men search your house for me.”
“Serena.”
“I’ve spent three years running from people like this. I’m done running.”
His eyes held mine.
For a second, neither of us spoke.
Then another crash came from the lower floor.
Charles stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what these people are capable of.”
“I understand perfectly.”
My voice shook, but I didn’t look away.
“They took my father. They hunted me for three years. They broke into my apartment tonight. And now they’re inside your house.”
I swallowed.
“If they’re here because of me, then I need to know why.”
Something changed in Charles’s face.
He reached for my hand.
This time, he didn’t grab me.
He simply took it.
“Then stay beside me.”
My heart stumbled.
It was the first time he’d asked instead of ordered.
I nodded.
We moved down the hallway together.
The mansion that had always felt enormous now felt strangely small. Every shadow looked like a hiding place. Every closed door looked like it could conceal someone waiting for us.
We reached the staircase.
A security guard appeared at the bottom.
“Mr. Humphrey.”
“Report.”
“Three vehicles breached the main gate. We have two men down, but the others split up. Some went toward the west wing.”
Charles’s expression changed.
“The west wing?”
“Yes, sir.”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel’s office.
The photograph.
The forged bank records.
Everything connected to that night was there.
“They’re looking for something,” I whispered.
Charles looked at me.
“Or someone.”
Before I could answer, a loud bang came from the west wing.
Charles immediately moved.
I followed.
“Stay behind me.”
“I am.”
We reached the double doors.
They were open.
A security guard lay unconscious on the floor.
My breath caught.
Charles crouched beside him.
“Alive?”
The guard groaned.
“Yes.”
Charles stood.
Then we heard footsteps.
Coming from Daniel’s office.
Charles pulled me behind him.
The door opened.
A man stepped out holding a black folder.
My heart stopped.
The same kind of folder Daniel had been carrying the night he disappeared.
The man saw us.
He froze.
Then he ran.
Charles went after him.
I followed before I could think better of it.
“Serena, stay back!”
The man disappeared around the corner.
Charles chased him down the corridor.
I ran after them, my heart pounding.
The man reached the staircase.
Charles caught him before he could get down.
They collided hard against the wall.
The folder fell.
I rushed toward it.
The man looked directly at me.
For one terrible second, I recognized his face.
Not clearly.
But enough.
A flash hit my mind.
Daniel.
A car.
Rain against glass.
The black folder in my hands.
Someone shouting.
Then the same man’s face.
My knees weakened.
“Serena!”
Charles caught me before I fell.
The man used the distraction to pull free.
By the time Charles looked up, he was already running.
“Damn it.”
Charles started after him, but I grabbed his sleeve.
“Wait.”
He turned.
“I know him.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You’ve seen him before?”
“I think so.”
“What do you mean, you think so?”
I pressed a hand against my temple.
“My memory…”
Another flash came.
Daniel standing beside a car.
His hand on my shoulder.
His voice.
Don’t trust anyone in my family.
I gasped.
Charles caught both my shoulders.
“What did you remember?”
“Daniel.”
“What about him?”
“He told me not to trust anyone in his family.”
Charles went completely still.
“My family?”
I nodded slowly.
“He said it before we left.”
“Before what?”
“I don’t know.”
The memory disappeared again.
Charles stared at me like he was trying to pull the answer from my face.
Then his eyes dropped to the folder on the floor.
He walked over and picked it up.
The cover was black.
No name.
No label.
He opened it.
The first page was a list of bank accounts.
The second was a series of transfers.
The third made Charles stop breathing.
I moved closer.
“What is it?”
He didn’t answer.
I looked over his shoulder.
A list of names filled the page.
Some belonged to companies.
Some belonged to people.
And one name stood out.
Evelyn Humphrey.
My eyes widened.
Charles closed the folder immediately.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
I looked at him.
“Charles…”
“No.”
“You saw her name.”
“I said no.”
He turned away.
I followed.
“Your mother is on those records.”
“That’s enough.”
“She could be involved.”
His eyes flashed.
“Be careful.”
“I’m only saying what the evidence shows.”
“You don’t know my mother.”
“And you didn’t know Adrian was at the scene until tonight.”
That silenced him.
His face tightened.
For the first time, I saw doubt settle heavily over him.
Then footsteps approached.
Adrian appeared at the end of the hallway.
His shirt was slightly torn, and there was blood on his forehead.
“Charles.”
Charles turned.
“Where have you been?”
“Trying to stop them from reaching the west wing.”
His eyes moved to me.
Then to the folder in Charles’s hand.
Something flickered across his face.
It was gone so quickly I almost missed it.
Fear.
Adrian walked closer.
“What did you find?”
Charles didn’t answer.
Adrian’s gaze stayed on the folder.
“Charles?”
Charles’s fingers tightened around it.
“Why were you at the scene three years ago?”
The hallway went silent.
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Charles pulled the security photograph from his pocket and held it up.
Adrian stared at it.
His face went pale.
I watched him carefully.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was caught.
“You were there,” Charles said.
Adrian swallowed.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
Adrian looked at me.
For some reason, that frightened me more than anything else.
His eyes moved back to Charles.
“Not here.”
Charles stepped closer.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Adrian glanced toward the staircase.
Then toward the dark hallway behind us.
“They’re not here for Serena.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“They’re here for what Daniel left behind.”
Charles’s expression hardened.
“What did Daniel leave behind?”
Adrian looked at the folder.
Then at me.
“He left something that could destroy the entire Humphrey family.”
A cold feeling spread through my chest.
“What?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Charles.
“Daniel wasn’t running from Serena that night.”
Charles’s face changed.
“He was running from someone else.”
“Who?”
Adrian opened his mouth.
A gunshot cracked through the mansion.
Adrian jerked backward.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“Adrian!”
Charles caught him before he hit the floor.
I screamed.
Another shot shattered the window behind us.
Charles dragged both Adrian and me behind the wall.
“Stay down!”
My heart pounded against my ribs.
Adrian clutched his side, breathing hard.
Charles looked toward the corridor.
“Who shot you?”
Adrian’s eyes found mine.
His lips moved.
I barely heard him.
“Your father…”
I froze.
“What?”
Adrian coughed.
“Marcus Kent…”
Charles stared at him.
“What about her father?”
Adrian forced the words out.
“He knew where Daniel was.”
My entire body went cold.
“My father?”
Adrian nodded weakly.
“He was there that night.”
Then his eyes closed.
And everything I believed about my father began to fall apart.
