The wedding that never happened
Every wedding begins with a promise. Regina’s began with a betrayal.”
Regina was standing in front of the courthouse entrance, staring at her reflection in the glass doors.
For a moment, she barely recognized herself. She was Adorned in a simple white dress which perfectly hugged her figure.
Her hair fell in soft curls around her shoulders, the excitement in her eyes was making her glow brighter than any expensive bridal gown ever could.
It was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. Finally tying the knot with Collins, the love of her life after 4 years of dating.
A smile spread across her lips as she was checking her phone waiting for his call or text But there was no messages, nor calls.Instinctively, her brows creased.
“This is strange.” She muttered.
It was so Unusual of him, not to have called at this time. Usually being the nervous one.
He would have called at least five times by now, Tessa nudged her shoulder
“You’ve been checking your phone every two seconds.” She said.
“You need to calm down.”
“I can’t help it. I’m bothered He should have called by now.” She emphasized.
Tessa glanced toward the entrance.
“Traffic maybe?”She said.
“Collins is never late.” Regina replied.
Her excitement gradually start fading into nervousness, Her heart beat faster.
Something felt wrong, Just then, she spotted him, Relief immediately washed through her.
“Thank God.” She muttered.
But despite the fact that he was walking toward the courthouse, something seemed different.
His shoulders looked tensed, his expression changed, Instead of excitement there was guilt written all over his face.
Regina’s smile slowly faded
“Collins?”She called his name.
He stopped a few feet away, his eyes refusing to meet hers.
A strange silence settled between them. The kind that makes skin crawl And warns even before disaster strikes.
“Collins?” she repeated.
“What is it?”
He swallowed hard.
“Can we talk?”
A chill instantly ran down her spine at his words.
“Talk about what?” She snapped.
His jaw tightened. “Privately.” He added.
Tessa immediately sensed the tension.
“I will wait for you inside.”
She was already heading inside As soon as she walked away, Regina turned back to him, Her heartbeat frantically up the pace.
“What is going on?”She asked.
Collins rubbed his face with his right hand palms,For several seconds there is silence between both of them, Finally he spoke.
“I’m sorry.” He said.
The words hit her like a slap.
“What?” Her voice shook.
“I’m sorry, Regina.”
“What for?”
Confusion twisted inside her chest.
“I don’t understand.”She continued
“Why are you apologizing?”
“You haven’t offended me.”
Finally, his eyes met hers. And what she saw there shattered her immediately.
Those eyes that used to look at her with so much love were no more, All that was left was guilt. Her pulse quickened.
“Collins…”She mumbled.
He took a shaky breath.
“I can’t marry you.” He finally muttered.
The world seem to come at a stand still, the moment the words hit her.
The sounds faded around her despite the world moving on Yet, Regina heard none of it , Just those four words.
“I can’t marry you.”
Involuntarily, her body shook.
“Is this a prank.” She muttered.
“You are joking right?
This is too expensive for me, You better be serious, Her lips parted as a nervous laugh escaped.
But his silence answered her questions Blood immediately drained from her face.
“No.” She stuttered.
“Regina” He called her name.
As if he want to explain himself.
“No.”She said.
She snapped repeatedly while she was shaking her head.
“No, Collins, Stop it.” She said.
“I’m serious, Regina.”He replied.
Her eyes widened as reality began to sink in, The man she was supposed to marry was standing in front of her, telling her the wedding wasn’t happening.
“Why?” Her voice cracked.
“Why would you do this to me?”
She cried, but Collins just looked away. Like it was a normal thing to do.
“I met someone else.” He muttered.
He was not taking her emotions into consideration.
“I found someone I love.”He said.
The words stabbed through her heart like daggers. She blinked as her mind refused to process them.
“What?”
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.” Collins snapped.
A bitter laugh escaped Regina’s lips.
“You didn’t mean for it to happen?”
“Regina, I.”
“How long?”She asked.
Her words cut him off, He hesitated and that was enough of a message, Her stomach dropped in disappointment.
“How long, Collins?”She said.
She snapped, her voice was heavy with anger.
“Eight months.”He replied.
The air left her lungs, Eight months, The words re echoed as if in a daze.
The entire eight months while she was planning a wedding, working extra shifts to help save money, and dreaming about their future together.
While she was living in the excitement of getting married soon, he had been with someone else, Tears filled her eyes immediately.
“You cheated on me for eight months?”She said to him.
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying sorry!” Will saying sorry fix this.?”
Several people nearby turned toward them but she no longer cared, Her heart was breaking right there on the courthouse steps.
You looked me in the eyes every day and told me you loved me and made me plan this wedding But it was all a lie.
Her voice shook with bitterness and all this while, you were sleeping with another woman, Collins looked ashamed.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“Stop saying that.” She snapped.
“You already did.”
Regina laughed through her tears, broken.
“Congratulations.”
Without hesitation, she took off the engagement ring and threw it at him.
The tears she had been holding back flowed freely now. Each step felt heavier than the last.
Her thoughts lost in a daze as she walked toward the entrance, trying to figure out how she would face her family and friends.
But then, life seems to be playing a prank with her. Just as her hand touched the courtroom door, a voice stopped her short.
“Excuse me,”
A masculine voice called.
“Marry me.” He said.
Out of the blue, Regina flinched ready to decline but then Collins walked into the scene.
Without hesitation, Regina went into the stranger, Her lips instantly rested into his as they engulfed in a kiss.
She knew this wasn’t right, She Had no knowledge who he was, but all she wanted at that moment was to get back at Collins.
And that seems to work, seeing how hurt he looked while watching the scene unfold before him.
One fiancé had just abandoned her. Another man had just proposed.
