Chapter 3

The next evening, I had just returned from the firm.

The partner had told me, in his office overlooking Central Park, that given how certain prenup clauses might be challenged under new case law, my position wasn't as weak as I'd assumed.

I walked into the living room. Beatrice and Olivia were sitting there, drinking Earl Grey. Steam rose from the bone china cups.

I walked straight to the guest room and pulled out my already-packed suitcase.

"Ella, where do you think you're going?" Beatrice hurried out of the living room. Her voice carried that familiar need for control.

"Moving out."

"Moving where?"

"That's none of your business."

I dragged the suitcase to the front door. Harrison blocked my path before the heavy carved oak.

He'd clearly rushed back from the office. His tie was loosened. His hair was disheveled.

"Where exactly are you going?" A kind of panic I'd never seen before edged his voice.

"Away from you."

"Ella, stop this! Your emotional outbursts help no one. Do you have any idea what this will do to the company's stock price?"

"I'm not being emotional." I looked at him. My gaze was calmer than it had ever been. "Harrison, I'm serious. I want a divorce."

He stood frozen, as if the meaning of the word had physically struck him.

I walked around him. Gripped the cold brass doorknob.

"Ella!" He tried to grab my arm. I yanked it away.

"Don't touch me."

I walked out of the Caldwell townhouse and onto the leaf-covered streets of the Upper East Side. I didn't look back.

My phone buzzed.

Harrison had texted. "I won't agree to a divorce."

I looked at the message and replied. "Then we'll litigate. The result will be the same."

Then I blocked his number.
