Chapter 1
Bang! The bedroom door burst open, slamming against the wall.
Cheryl Glevon gasped, her heart pounding as fear shot through her. But when she saw who it was, she let out a shaky breath and pressed a hand to her chest.
“Kaiden! What’s the meaning of this?” she snapped, still trying to calm herself. “Have you lost your mind, barging into my room like that?”
Her hands trembled slightly, and her chest rose and fell with deep, angry breaths. The shock had hit her hard, and she was still recovering from it.
But Kaiden didn’t seem to care. His face was tense with anger, his jaw clenched as he marched further into the room without saying a word.
"Why shouldn't I walk into your room, Mom?" Kaiden’s hands were buried in his pant pockets as he glared at his mother, his eyes burning with anger.
"Who is that person in my house?" His furious voice echoed through the room.
"Who are you talking about, KD?" His mother frowned, confused by his outburst.
"Don’t act like you don’t know, Mom! Who is that woman in my house?" His frustration grew, his heart pounding.
Cheryl Glevon narrowed her eyes slightly, the corners of her lips curling up. "Ohh… you mean Mirabel?"
Her smile widened as she thought to herself, Mirabel is fast.
"Mom! You still haven’t answered my question." His patience was wearing thin. If she weren’t his mother, he might have shaken her just to make her understand he wasn’t playing around.
"I did answer you, son." She spread her arms casually before settling onto the couch.
"You asked who she is, and I told you. She’s Mirabel."
Kaiden’s jaw tightened as he stared at her. Frustration surged through him, and he raked his fingers through his hair in exasperation. Was she mocking him? He had come home after a long, exhausting day, only to find a stranger in his house, dressed in a way that made his blood boil.
And now, instead of giving him a proper explanation, his mother was playing games.
He took a deep breath and stepped closer, his voice low and firm.
"Why is she in my house, Mom?"
"Now you’ve asked another question," she said, clicking her tongue. "To get along with you."
So that was it? To get along with him?
"Mom! You used to send them to my office, and now you’re sending them to my house?!" Kaiden clenched his fists, shutting his eyes to keep his anger in check. But it was too much. His fist slammed into the couch beside her, making her jump.
"Do you even realize I could have her arrested for trespassing? For burglary?"
The words hit her like a shockwave. She turned to him sharply.
"You wouldn’t dare, Kaiden!" she snapped, standing up to face him.
Suddenly, he laughed, a dark, chilling sound that sent shivers down her spine. But the laughter died as quickly as it came. His expression hardened. His eyes turned cold, void of any warmth.
He stared at her, his mother, but in that moment, she felt like a stranger to him. Did she really think he was bluffing? Did she forget what he was capable of?
He had lost count of the women she had sent to his office, thinking she could push one into his life. He had told her, begged her, to stop. And instead, she had gone even further.
She had given away the keys. His keys. The ones she had no right to give. And yet, she saw nothing wrong in her actions.
Maybe it was time to take those keys back. Maybe it was time to remind her that some lines should never be crossed.
"The next time you try this, Cheryl Glevon, I will forget that we share blood and show you what true ruthlessness is."
His voice was ice-cold, filled with something dark and terrifying. A chill ran down her spine.
Did he just call her by her name? This was her son! The boy she had raised, watched grow, but now, she couldn't recognize him. When had he turned into this… this monster?
Her mouth hung open in shock, but before she could speak, he shot her one last warning glare and turned to leave.
"Kaiden! I did it for you! It's for your own good!" she finally managed to call out, her voice trembling.
She had only wanted her son’s happiness. Every mother just wanted what was best for their child.
Kaiden stopped in his tracks. He let out a bitter sneer before turning back around, his steps slow but full of fury.
"You did it for me?" His voice was low and menacing. "Is that what you’re saying?"
He kept walking toward her, his presence suffocating. This wasn’t her son! She stumbled back, step after step, until she hit the wall.
"Kaiden, stop!!" she screamed.
The sound of her cry sent alarms through the house. Within seconds, her eldest son and youngest daughter rushed into the room, only to freeze at the sight before them.
Their mother, trembling against the wall. Their brother, towering over her, radiating pure danger.
Holy hell. This was bad.
The older brother knew Kaiden well. He had seen this side of him before, and the memory alone was enough to make his blood run cold. Kaiden didn’t lose his temper easily, but when he did, the aftermath was worse than any disaster.
And then Kaiden spoke again.
"Cheryl Glevon didn’t care about what was best for me when she killed Penelope and her family."
His words struck her like lightning. Her eyes widened in pain, her breath catching in her throat. It felt like a hundred knives stabbing straight into her heart.
"I didn’t kill them! I didn’t!!" Cheryl cried, tears streaming down her face.
How much longer would she have to carry this burden? How much longer would her own son refuse to believe her?
Kaiden’s eyes burned with rage. "You didn’t kill them, but you chased them to their deaths! Isn’t that the same as killing them?"
"Stop! Stop!!" Cheryl screamed, her body collapsing as she gripped her hair, her sobs turning into heartbreaking wails.
"That’s enough, Kaiden!" Sylvester Glevon, their elder brother, finally snapped.
Everyone knew how deeply their mother had suffered after the Smiths’ deaths. It had been a wound no one dared to touch, until now.
Sylvester stormed over, grabbing Kaiden and pulling him away from their trembling mother. "Enough!" he shouted again.
Kaiden straightened his shirt, brushing off invisible dust, then locked eyes with his brother. "Talk to your mother." His voice was cold, fierce. Then, without another word, he stormed out of the room.
As soon as he was gone, Sylvester rushed to their mother, helping her up and settling her onto the large bed.
"I didn’t kill them, Sylv!" she sobbed, her entire body shaking.
"I know, Mom. I believe you." His heart clenched at the sight of her pain.
She shook her head, her voice breaking. "Kaiden doesn’t. My own son doesn’t believe me…"
Her words came out as a whisper, filled with unbearable sorrow.
Emily, their youngest sibling, watched in silence, her chest tightening. She couldn’t take it anymore. With a deep sigh, she turned and walked out of the room.
Why had Kaiden brought up something that was buried long ago? Why now? Why?
