CHAPTER 1: THE TRUTH IN CONTRACTS

After being married for five years to Ryan Sterling, CEO of Sterling Global Enterprises, I discovered that Ethan, the son I'd raised for the past four years, wasn't mine.

I stood frozen outside the family physician's private clinic, my heart pounding as I overheard their conversation. "Your son's blood type is extremely rare, Mr. Sterling," Dr. Matthews said, his voice low and urgent. "We need his biological mother here immediately. Mrs. Sterling's blood won't work."

My husband's anguished voice cut through my shock. "I'll handle it," Ryan replied, rubbing his temples. "I'll bring her soon."

My head buzzed, disbelief washing over me. Wasn't I Ethan's mother? I'd carried him, birthed him, stayed up through every fever and nightmare for four years.

But as I remained outside the office, pieces of their conversation formed a devastating picture. The man who'd put a ring on my finger, who'd sworn before our families and the board to honor me, had betrayed me before our wedding. He'd even swapped our child.

I couldn't understand why. We'd grown up together in elite Manhattan circles. To become his wife, I'd given up my position as Chief Strategy Officer at my family's Voss Global Corporation, a role I'd trained my entire life for. I'd walked away from my power to stand beside him.

I remembered that day so clearly. Ryan had gotten down on one knee in the penthouse garden, tears streaming down his face. "You've sacrificed everything for me, Victoria. I swear on my family's company legacy, I'll never let you down."

Those solemn vows still echoed in my mind, but reality struck me like a knife to the heart. I stumbled back toward Ethan's hospital room in a daze, my chest tightening as if someone had wrapped chains around it.

I couldn't go inside. I was terrified I'd break down and demand a DNA test right there, or worse—that I'd lose control completely. So I turned and ran, my instincts pushing me faster through the hospital corridors.

My older brother Marcus, Vice President of Voss Global, was just pulling up to the hospital entrance. Seeing my state, he immediately grabbed my arms. "What's wrong? Where are you going? How's Ethan?"

The entire Voss family had been frantic since Ethan fell ill. Marcus had even left an important merger meeting to fly back overnight. My eyes burned with unshed tears as I looked at him. "Help me find something out, Marcus."

"Anything," he promised.

My voice cracked. "Ethan… he might not be my son."
