A Simple Meal

The Rain is still pouring heavily outside the supermarket when Kelly car walked away from the supermarket.

The city lights reflected against the wet roads while traffic crawled slowly through the evening storm. Inside the car, silence filled the space between them.

Naomi sat beside the window, Kelly suit jacket still wrapped around her shoulders.

The warmth bothered her.

Not because it felt uncomfortable.

Because it felt comforting.

And comfort was dangerous.

Especially from men like Kelly Lawson.

She stole a quick glance at him.

He seated quietly inside the car, he carried the calm confidence of someone used to being obeyed. One hand rested loosely on the steering wheel while the other adjusted on the cuff of his expensive wrist watch.

Everything about him screamed wealth.

Control.

Power.

The complete opposite of her own life.

“You can stop here,” Naomi said suddenly as they approached a bus stop near the road.

Kelly did not slow down.

“You can barely keep your eyes open.”

“I am serious.”

“So am I.”

Naomi sighed gently in frustration.

“I already said thank you for helping me back there.”

“You also nearly collapsed twice.”

Thank God

“But I am still alive.”

“Barely.”

She folded her arms together tightly.

“There it is again.”

Kelly glanced at her briefly.

“What?”

“That tone.”

“What tone?”

“The one rich people use when they look at people struggling .”

Kelly eyebrows lifted slightly.

“And what tone is that?”Kelly replied gently…

“Pity.”

He looked back at the road.

Kelly Laughing out loud “ You think I pity you?”

“I know you do.”

A faint humorless smile touched his lips.

“lol If I pitied everyone who worked hard while exhausted, I will spend my entire life feeling sorry for people.”

Naomi frowned slightly.

That was not the answer she was expecting.

Kelly stopped at a red light traffic sign on the read before speaking again.

“I am concerned because you looked unwell. That is different.”

Naomi looked away quietly.

Concern.

Hmmm.

It had been a long time since anyone showed genuine concern for her.

Most people only demanded things from her.

Money.

Time.

Patience.

Strength.

Energy,

Nobody asked whether she was surviving or not.

Her stomach growled suddenly.

Loudly.

Naomi closed her eyes immediately in embarrassment.

Wonderful.

Kelly pretended not to notice anything.

But the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.

“There is a restaurant nearby,” he said casually.

“No.”

“You answered before I even finished.”

“I am not going.”she replied quickly…

Deep down she was very hungry.

“You need food.”

“I can feed myself.”

“Can you?”

The question landed harder than intended.

Naomi pride flared instantly.

“I don’t need charity.”

Kelly parked the car slowly outside a quiet restaurant with warm golden lights glowing through large windows.

“I didn’t offer charity.”

“Then what are you offering?”

“Dinner.”

“Why?”

He finally looked directly at her.

“Because human beings usually eat after fainting.”

Naomi almost rolled her eyes.

Almost.

“You always this controlling?”

“You always this stubborn?”

“Yes.”

A small silence followed for a few moments.

Then unexpectedly, Kelly laughed softly.

Not mockingly.

Genuinely.

The sound caught Naomi off.

It changed his entire face.

For the first time, he looked less intimidating and more human.

“I am not hungry,” she muttered weakly.

Her stomach betrayed her again with another growl sound.

Very loud at this time.

Kelly opened the car door gently.

“That argument is losing badly.”

Naomi wanted to stay angry.

Really.

But the smell of food from the restaurant entrance nearly broke her, the aroma make her resolve the argument instantly.

And truthfully?

She was starving.

She was very hungry.

Exhaustion had stripped away most of her pride already.

Slowly, she stepped out of the car quietly.

The restaurant was small and elegant without being overly flashy.

Soft music played quietly in the background while a few couples, few guys with their friends sat down scattered around the room.

Naomi immediately felt out of the place.

Very out of the place.

Her supermarket uniform suddenly seemed cheap and embarrassing compared to the polished atmosphere around her.

The hostess smiled brightly at Kelly.

“Good evening, Mr. Lawson.”

Naomi noticed it immediately.

Recognition.

Respect.

The kind people only gave wealthy men.

Kelly nodded his head politely.

“A table for two.”

They were both led toward a quiet corner near the window inside the restaurant.

Naomi sat down carefully, looking at the menu like it might explode in her hands.

Then she saw the prices.

Her eyes widened instantly.

One meal here could pay her transport fare for almost two weeks.

“This place is too expensive,” she whispered.

Kelly picked up his menu casually.

“You are not paying.”

“That is exactly the problem.”

He looked at her calmly.

“You think accepting one meal means you owe me something?”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him slightly.

Naomi lowered her eyes.

“You don’t understand how the world works for women like me.”

Kelly stayed quiet.

“Nothing is ever free,” she continued softly. “Especially from rich men.”

Something about the sadness in her voice made his chest tighten unexpectedly.

“Who hurt you?”

The question escaped before he could stop himself.

Naomi gave a short laugh without humor.

“Life.”

The waitress approached.

Kelly ordered first.

“Two plates of jollof rice, grilled chicken, turkey, peppered snails, and fresh juice.”

Naomi looked up immediately.

“You didn’t even ask what I wanted.”

“You looked overwhelmed.”

“I can order for myself.”

“Good. Next time you can.”

Naomi want to opened her mouth to argue again

Then stopped.

Because somehow, beneath the calm confidence and irritating control, Kelly did not seem arrogant.

Just observant.

The waitress left.

Then silence settled between them for a few seconds.

Naomi stared at the rain outside pouring heavily.

Kelly studied her quietly.

Up close, exhaustion was written all over her face.

But so was resilience.

Most people would have broken already under whatever burden she carried.

Yet she kept going.

That fascinated him.

“So,” he said finally, “what is your story?”kelly asked gently…

Naomi looked at him cautiously.

“What makes you think I have one?”

“Everyone has one.”

She hesitated.

Normally, she never shared her personal details with strangers.

But tonight something felt different.

Maybe because she was too tired to pretend anymore.

“My mother is sick,” she admitted quietly.

Kelly expression softened slightly.

“What happened?”

“Kidney complications.”

He leaned back slightly.

“And you are the only one paying the hospital bills alone?”

Naomi nodded her head once.

“My father died years ago. There is nobody else.”

Kelly understood many things instantly after that.

The exhaustion.

The fainting.

The desperation hidden behind her pride.

“That is why you refused to leave work.”

“I can’t afford to loose the job.”

I have bills to pay.

The sentence came out flat and emotionless.

Like something she had repeated to herself too many times.

Kelly looked down briefly before asking,

“How old are you?”

“Twenty four.”

Too young, he thought quietly.

Far too young to carry this much responsibility all alone by herself.

The food arrived moments later.

The smell alone, the nice aroma coming out from the food nearly destroyed Naomi self control.

Kelly noticed the way her eyes lingered on the plate.

“Eat your food,” he said simply.

Naomi hesitated for exactly three seconds before hunger won her completely.

She took a bite.

Then another.

Then another faster one.

Because she was very hungry.

Only after several mouthfuls did she realize Kelly was watching her with amusement.

Her cheeks warmed immediately.

“Sorry.”

“For what?”

“Because I am eating too fast.”

“You are hungry. That is normal.”

Naomi slowed down slightly, embarrassed.

“This is really good.”

“See? The world didn’t end because someone bought you dinner.”

She gave him a look.

“Still suspicious.”

Kelly smirked faintly.

“Fair enough.”

For the first time that evening, the tension between them eased slightly.

The conversation became quieter.

More natural.

Naomi learned Kelly hated crowded parties despite attending them constantly for business.

Kelly learned Naomi loved old romance novels and secretly wanted to travel someday.

“You read romance?” he asked surprisingly.

Naomi narrowed her eyes.

“Men always act shocked by that.”

“You don’t seem like someone who believes in fairy tales.”

“I don’t.”

“Then why romance novels?”

She shrugged lightly.

“Because fictional men behave better than the real ones.”

Kelly laughed again.

A real laugh this time.

And Naomi hated how much she liked hearing it.

Hours seemed to pass strangely fast.

Eventually the rain outside softened into a light drizzle.

Naomi checked the time and immediately stood up.

“Oh no.”

“What?”

“I need to get home.”

It’s already late.

Kelly stood as well.

“I will drive you home.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

Naomi looked at him carefully.

Most wealthy men she had encountered carried entitlement like a second skin.

But Kelly never once tried touching her unnecessarily.

Never flirted cheaply.

Never made inappropriate comments.

It confused her.

As they walked outside together, cold wind brushed against Naomi face.

She pulled Kelly jacket tighter around herself unconsciously.

Kelly noticed but said nothing.

At the car, Naomi paused suddenly.

“Why are you being nice to me?”Naomi asked gently…

Kelly looked genuinely thoughtful for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

“I don’t know yet.”

And somehow, that answer felt more dangerous than anything else he could have said.
