The Unseen Spark

POV: Isabella Reed

The door to Michael Grey’s office closed behind me with a quiet click, and I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. My heart was still pounding in my chest, a mix of adrenaline and nerves surging through my veins. I had faced tough bosses before, but none quite like him. Michael Grey was a force of nature—intimidating, calculating, and utterly unyielding. And yet, standing there in front of him, I had felt something unexpected. A challenge, yes, but also a flicker of something else, something I couldn’t quite name.

I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. This was just a job, I reminded myself. A good job, with decent pay and opportunities for growth. I wasn’t here to impress Michael Grey or win his approval. I was here to do my work and make a name for myself in the sales world. That was all.

As I made my way back to my desk, I couldn’t help but replay the conversation in my mind. The way he had scrutinized me, as if he was trying to see right through me, had sent a shiver down my spine. But I wasn’t about to let him intimidate me. I knew I was good at my job, and I wasn’t going to let anyone—no matter how powerful—make me doubt that.

My colleague, Jenna, glanced up as I approached, her eyebrows raised in curiosity. “What did Mr. Grey want?” she asked, her voice low enough that the others around us wouldn’t overhear.

“Just a little chat about my performance,” I replied lightly, sliding into my chair.

Jenna’s eyes widened slightly. “Performance? But you’re one of the top performers this quarter!”

I shrugged, trying to play it off. “You know how he is. Perfectionist to the core.”

Jenna nodded sympathetically. “Yeah, I’ve heard stories. He’s got a reputation for being… tough, to say the least.”

“That’s one way to put it,” I muttered under my breath. Tough was an understatement. Michael Grey was like a brick wall—cold, unyielding, and impossible to move. But I wasn’t about to let him get under my skin. I had worked too hard to get here, and I wasn’t going to let anyone stand in my way.

I turned my attention back to my computer, determined to focus on the tasks at hand. There were sales reports to review, calls to make, and clients to follow up with. I could handle all of that with my eyes closed. What I couldn’t shake, however, was the nagging feeling that Michael Grey was watching my every move, waiting for me to slip up.

As the day wore on, I found myself glancing up at his office more often than I cared to admit. The blinds were drawn, and I couldn’t see inside, but I could feel his presence like a looming shadow over the entire floor. What was it about him that got under my skin? Was it just the pressure of working under someone so demanding, or was there something else—something deeper—that I wasn’t ready to confront?

By the time lunch rolled around, I needed a break. Jenna and I headed to the small café down the street, a quiet place we often escaped to when the office got too stifling. As we settled into a corner booth, Jenna gave me a concerned look.

“Isabella, are you okay? You seem a bit… distracted today.”

I forced a smile. “I’m fine, just a lot on my mind. You know how it is.”

She nodded, stirring her coffee absently. “Yeah, but I’ve never seen you this rattled before. Did something happen with Mr. Grey?”

“Nothing happened,” I insisted, though the words felt hollow even to me. “He just wanted to remind me that this is a business, not a social club.”

Jenna snorted. “That sounds like him. I swear, the man has ice in his veins.”

I laughed, but the sound was a little too forced. “He’s just doing his job, I guess. Can’t fault him for that.”

“Maybe, but he doesn’t have to be such a—” Jenna caught herself and glanced around to make sure no one was listening. “Such a hardass about it.”

I shrugged again, though the truth was I agreed with her. Michael Grey was a hardass, and that was putting it mildly. But there was something about him—something that made me want to prove him wrong. I wasn’t just some careless employee who didn’t take her job seriously. I was more than capable of meeting his impossibly high standards, and I intended to do just that.

When we returned to the office, I threw myself back into work with renewed determination. The afternoon passed in a blur of calls and emails, and by the time I looked up again, the sun was beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the city outside.

As I packed up my things to leave, I glanced up at Michael’s office one last time. The blinds were still drawn, but the light was on, and I could see his shadow moving behind the glass. For a moment, I wondered what he was doing, what thoughts were running through his mind. Was he thinking about our earlier conversation? Or was I just another employee to him, easily forgotten as soon as I walked out the door?

I shook my head, pushing the thoughts away. It didn’t matter what Michael Grey thought of me. What mattered was that I knew my worth, and I wasn’t about to let anyone, not even a billionaire CEO, make me forget that.

As I stepped out into the cool evening air, I felt a sense of resolve settle over me. I was going to show Michael Grey exactly what I was made of. And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, I’d surprise him along the way.
