I’m Gonna Do It My Own Way

CHAPTER 7

ETHAN’S POV

I'M GONNA DO IT MY OWN WAY

After that encounter with Gina and her kid, that's when I fully remembered that I might have a kid. Because judging from Mira’s character, I'm sure she won't abort the baby but I have to be sure.

I heard a knock on my door, and my assistant came in while bowing her head.

“Get out, I'm not in the mood.” I said to her in a curt voice, without even looking at her face.

I dropped my jacket on my chair, and I paced around my office as I remembered Abigail’s lies and betrayal. My jaws were tightened and I held my desk until my hand turned white.

I turned and took my phone dialing Liam’s number again. The call connected to the second ring.

“Buddy, I need your help on something.” I said, my voice as cold as winter. “Her name is Mira, she was my maid from three years ago.” I added finally.

He ended the call abruptly, without saying another word and I'm certain he's gone give me something. I need to make right my mistakes, even though it is unforgivable I was an asshole.

I sat down and I leaned back into my armchair, with my eyes closed I remembered the conversation I had with my uncle Frederick.

I owe everything I am to my uncle Frederick, because he knows better and he's been in this game before me. When he came over to have dinner with me, in my house it was normal the only difference was my affair with Mira. Which I didn't let anyone know of, because I knew what was going to happen even though she made me happy.

The dinning was an epitome of class and elegance. I sat at the head seat exuding power, while my uncle sat across from me while studying my face. Uncle likes to visit me unannounced to see how I'm doing, since I didn't want to take his advice and get married immediately.

The maids came in with a display of food, prepared by the best chef that New York could offer. Mira came in timidly with the wine, my demeanor softened immediately I saw her. She missed a step and almost fell with the wine.

“You have to be careful, Mira.” I said and immediately helped her.

“Thanks sir,” Mira said shyly as I collected the wine from her and placed it on the dining table.

Uncle Frederick, who was watching the scene unfold before him, leaned back into his chair with raised eyebrows. “You're really nice to your….. maid,” he remarked, his voice filled with curiosity.

I shrugged, not changing my emotions, “it takes nothing to be nice to your staff.”

“I know, son,” he said, pouring his wine. “But there's more to this act of kindness.” he said looking at me while dropping the bottle.

I didn't respond to my uncle, and we both ate our first course meal. And Mira, in the company of other maids, brought the second course meal with uncle looking at her, making her uncomfortable. “Thanks Mira, you can go. Have the rest of the night off.” I said to her,

“Okay sir,” she replied, bowed to us and left immediately with a flushed face.

Uncle fixed his gaze on me, trying to see what was wrong with me. “Ethan, you surprised me so much. I mean I didn't know you were friends with the help. What changed? "What's so special about this girl?” he asked me.

I set my fork down, while clenching my teeth. “I'm not being nice or friends with her. She's just a hardworking staff, that deserves appreciation.”

“Why don't I believe you son,” he said with a stern voice. “I watched you grow so I know when you're lying. Word of advice for free, son.”

“I'm listening,” I said while leaning back into my chair.

“Ethan, you're born into a world of power and status, you should know that frolicking with the help is not acceptable. You should know your worth.” he added with a straight face.

I didn't respond because doing so would make it so obvious that it had something to do with her.

“About the famous quote, don't mix business with pleasure. These are two parallel lines that shouldn't meet each other, it's very destructive if they do, and hers is ominous.” he said while looking at me critically.

“I'm not sleeping with her,” I blurted out with a straight face.

“Very good,” he said in a firm voice. “If you want her, get her a taste and that's it. Because dalliance with someone of her class, could be thrilling but disastrous trust me. I've had such experiences that don't end well.”

I tighten my grip on my wine glass, the rest of the passed with lighter conversations with uncle Frederick. Within I knew he was right, this affair was cursed from the very start and I knew what I was going to do. To come out of this crappy situation, I didn't want this uncomfortable situation with my uncle again.

As I walked my uncle to his car, he stopped me midway while holding my hand.

“Have fun with her if you must, but always remember that it's not gonna amount to something because she's worthless.” he said, tapped my shoulders and went into his car.

I sat up and took my phone, and logged into Instagram typing her name. I got a lot of options looked through until I found her, Mira Whitmore. Going through her page she just posts about pastries and herself. She looks good. I must hand it to her.

I was interrupted by my assistant’s locking on my door, I dropped my phone.

“Come in,” I said to her in a tired tone.

She came in, “Sir, you have a meeting in thirty minutes.” she said while I looked at my phone.

“Cancel it,” I said and she bowed and left.

I dropped my phone and rubbed my temple, I stood up and walked towards my couch and sat down.

“Karma is bitch,” I said as I leaned back and closed my eyes.

Buzzing of the phone interrupted me. I'm not in the right state of mind to speak with her. I called Maria, my assistant on the intercom.

“Get in here,” I said and dropped the phone.

The door opened and closed momentarily, “You asked for me sir,” she said.

“Cancel all my meetings,” I said to her.

“Okay sir, but what reason should I give them?” she asked me.

I gave her a bad glare, “I. pay you good money Maria. Shouldn't you know what to say.” I said while standing up.

“Okay sir,” she said in a scared voice and left.

I shut the front door with a click, my house was always quiet as always. I loosen my tie and dropped on the couch with my jacket, I got a bottle of water from the fridge and drank. The lies and betrayal from earlier, playing afresh in my memory and my anger resurfaced.

Abigail was already there immediately. I turned to leave, she was in her silk robe sitting and waiting for me. She looked every inch perfect, but underneath the elegance lies a liar and a cheat who can't be trusted.

“Babe, I made dinner,” she said, smiling awkwardly. “We can have dinner and talk, while I run you a bath.”

I just ignored her blatantly, headed towards the stairs. I can hear her following behind me, her footwear making click sounds on the marble floor.

“I'm not proud of my lies to you,” she said while blocking my way, her tone light and clear. “I wanted to also say that I've started taking the meds. I wanna make it up to you.”

I looked at her without any emotions on my face, she held my hands tightly.

“I'm sorry for not being honest with you,” she said calmly looking at my face for any hopeful emotions. “I want to make us work, I want to make it right and give you what you want.”

I looked at her in amazement, I knew she wasn't being sincere she was just trying to butter me up. I changed my gaze to cold and distant, because I won't believe her words because it was all lies and no truth to it.

I entered the guest room and she went with me while holding my hands. I took off my wrist watch and my shirt. Abigail got in front of me, and stopped my actions.

“Fine, I fucking lied to you!” she said in a raised voice. “Don't ignore me, I'm trying, why can't you just forgive me already.” she said again.

I ignored her and went into my walk in closet, took off my clothes and walked into the bathroom. I showered and I tied the towel loosely on my waist.

“I'm gonna leave you for now. You're still mad but I'm not gonna let you ignore me again.” she said and left the room. I packed a duffel bag for my business meeting, the new jersey meeting couldn't have come at a better time. I needed space to think and know how I feel about things.

I lay in bed taking care of work related issues, and my phone rang again.

“Nathan, it's late,”I said, still typing on my laptop.

“Ethan, I just wanted to see how you're doing.” he said in a cheerful voice.

I stopped tying on my laptop and smiled, “Why the fuck are you happy. I'm not there, you know.” I added feeling lighter in a way.

“I'm away and it's fun. You're not my girlfriend dude, quit being funny.” he added to me.

“It's good hearing from you,” I said and my smile stopped.

“Hope you're good Ethan, I'll be seeing you on Monday.” he said.

“Alright,” I said and dropped my phone.

My flight was about to leave in thirty minutes, I wore my hoodie and sweatpants. Carrying my duffel bag downstairs. My assistant called me immediately.

“Good morning sir,” she said in a clear voice. “Everything is set, I've made the reservation for the penthouse. Your flight will be leaving….

I cut her short, “I know, thanks and take care of things around the office.”

“Will do that sir,” she said and I put the phone in my pocket.

“Where are you going?” Abigail asked me to fold her arms.

“I'm going out of town,” I said to her briskly.

“And you didn't tell me, we saw each other last night. We live in the same house.” she said in a low voice with a bitter smile.

“I don't answer to you,” I replied walking out towards the door.

“Really, you're still angry about that. I said I'm sorry Ethan.” she said, blocking my way.

“Get out of my way,” I said in a low but cold voice balling my fist.

“You can't ignore me forever, Ethan. We're married hmm see,” she said, showing me her ring.

I looked at her ring finger, and gently got her out of my way. While walking with my bodyguards, I could still hear her calling out my name.

“Ethan, you can do this to me.” she shouted as ignored her.

I wore my glasses as the car drove away to the airport. I was going to a business meeting in New jersey. I was going to breathe fresh air and think of the things that make me happy.

I got to the airport and got through immigration, it was my airline and I was flying in my private jet.

My phone rang and it was uncle Frederick, I looked at it and ignored it. Because I know what he's gonna talk about, and I'm not going to listen to that bullshit now. I'm done listening to people, I'm gonna do it my own way.

I switched off my phone, and put it in my pocket while walking towards the hanger for take off.
