Love Past Part 2
Current Days
Xander had just entered the company where he was the CEO. The day had dawned calm, sunny, but not too hot. It was the day he dreaded the most, the hiring of new employees.
Already inside the elevator, he looked at the watch on his left wrist; it was past 8:00 in the morning. All the candidates should already be in place for the start of the interview.
As soon as he exited the elevator on the top floor, the presidential floor, he noticed something different. He didn't know if it was the crowd of people sitting in chairs spread across the entrance hall of the floor.
His receptionist, Margareth, was at her desk. As soon as she saw him, she went to meet him.
"Boss, your day is packed with interviews today," Margareth said as she walked towards Xander.
"Anything else to inform me?" Xander asked, walking towards his office.
“What should I do with you, Margareth?” Xander thought, already stressed with the secretary's work.
A few minutes later, a candidate was called for the interview. He heard three knocks on the door and immediately instructed them to enter. The first person to enter was the annoying secretary, who said with her annoying voice:
"Mr. Jason McVag." The woman announced, making way for the man to enter.
As soon as Xander heard the name Margareth announced, his body froze, the hairs on his arms stood up. It was totally impossible for it to be him; surely, he would be married with a dozen kids running around. He dismissed the idea that it was Jason, his Jason.
However, as soon as a tall, athletic man dressed in a suit entered, he thought it really wasn’t his Jason, but upon seeing his eyes, he was sure it was his Jason.
Realizing who was really in front of him, calm and smiling as always, he swallowed hard.
“What the hell is he doing here?” He wondered, puzzled. Jason had never been a poor person, he never needed to work to support himself.
"Did you come for the interview?" he asked as soon as the door closed.
"No."
Jason responded monosyllabically.
"So what are you doing here, Jason McVag?"
"I came to see you."
Jason answered the question as if he were having coffee on the corner.
"Let me get this straight," Xander paused to moisten his dry lips before continuing, "You travel to another city to find someone you haven’t seen in 10 years?"
"Actually, it’s been 15."
"Whatever, nobody's counting," he retorted, trying to seem indifferent, but he was truly happy that Jason had looked for him after so long.
"I am," he said with apparent sorrow in his voice.
"How's life?" Xander asked, immediately regretting it.
“Who the hell asks ‘how's life?’” he thought, indignant with himself.
"It’s going well, but it’s never been the same," Jason paused, approaching Xander, who was behind the desk, "since we were together..."
"We didn’t stay together by your choice," Xander said succinctly. "Why did you come looking for me? Aren't you satisfied with your beautiful and perfect family?"
"You know I never was..." He replied, voice choked with unshed tears, "You know that very well, Xander. How’s your life?" Jason threw the earlier question back at him.
"As you can see, it’s going full steam ahead," Xander affirmed, spreading his arms as if to say, look around and tell me how I am.
"I can see that," he whispered back, "Since I came here for nothing, I’ll leave." As soon as he finished speaking, he left the room as quickly as possible. Since he wasn’t welcome there, he didn’t want to stay any longer. He wouldn’t insist, not anymore. Surely, Xander had moved on; otherwise, he wouldn’t be treating him so badly.
