Chapter 4

Ella’s POV

Beep, beep… The sound of machines echoed around me, but I couldn’t open my eyes. It felt like I was dying. I could hear voices drifting in and out as people entered and left the room. I was in a hospital. The last thing I remembered was lying down, people hovering over me… and now, I was here.

I forced my eyes open and scanned the room. My gaze landed on Maya, curled up on the couch, looking as though she hadn’t rested in years. As soon as she noticed I was awake, she bolted toward me.

“Hey, girl! How are you feeling? Let me get the doctor,” she said softly before rushing out the door.

Less than a minute later, she returned with a medical team who immediately began checking my vitals. “It’s a good thing you’re finally awake, Miss Isabella. You fought hard,” the doctor said warmly, though I could barely process his words.

After they left, Maya and I were alone. I glanced around the hospital room again. It looked far too luxurious—something we could never afford.

“I know what you’re thinking, Ella,” Maya said with a knowing smile. “Don’t worry about it. Mr. Jordan is covering the expenses.”

Ah, yes—Jordan. But why would he put me in a place like this? And how was I ever going to repay him?

“Girl, I was so worried about you. We both were! Jordan comes here every day—can you believe that? You’ve been here for two weeks now. I’m so glad you’re finally awake. I should call him, but I’m sure he already knows. His bodyguards have been stationed outside your room the entire time,” Maya said, her voice full of relief.

She kept going on about everything Jordan had done for me, and I couldn’t help but feel even more indebted to him.

My head throbbed as I tried to sit up. Maya quickly helped me, and I winced at the pain in my arms and legs. The bruises were still visible. Absentmindedly, I traced them with my fingers while we chatted. Maya told me how Mrs. Denver had been making life unbearable for the staff, pushing them harder than ever.

One maid had already quit, saying she couldn’t deal with Mrs. Denver’s temper anymore. She was afraid that if she stayed any longer, she’d end up disrespecting her.

I couldn’t blame her. Maybe her life had been easier before this, but I wasn’t in a position to leave. I couldn’t afford to lose my job.

Just then, the door opened, and Jordan walked in. He looked even more handsome than I remembered. His skin was flawless—far better than any of the filthy men I’d encountered.

“Ella, how are you feeling?” he asked as he strode toward me. “I came as soon as I heard you were awake. Do you need anything? I can send for it right now.”

His presence was all I wanted at that moment. It was strange, but I felt… safe with him.

I shook my head and offered a small smile. “No, thank you, Master. Everything is fine. I feel much better.”

Jordan took my hand in his, bringing it to his lips before murmuring, “You scared me.”

His voice was uncharacteristically gentle, but then his expression hardened. “I know I shouldn’t be telling you this now, but your accident wasn’t just a random hit-and-run. Someone wanted you dead. Or rather, wants you dead. And I swear to you, Ella, I’ll find that person—dead or alive.”

A shiver ran down my spine as my eyes widened at his statement.

When did I make enemies? I hadn’t even spent a full week in Grey Hill, and someone already wanted me dead. Could they have found me? No, that was impossible. They couldn’t know—not yet.

Maya paced the room, her expression filled with concern. “Ella, this isn’t funny. I thought your accident was just an accident, but we were wrong. What are we going to do, Master? Should we be worried?” she asked, her voice laced with unease.

“There’s nothing for you to worry about,” Jordan replied, his tone firm. “I’ll handle it.” He exhaled, then added, “One more thing—I just bought a property in Grey Hill. I was originally supposed to stay with my mother for a week, but I’ll be here for a while. And once you’re discharged, you’ll be staying with me until I’m sure you’re safe. I’m not asking, Ella. I’m telling you. So don’t protest.”

I swallowed hard. What about my job at the mansion? His mother would be furious if she knew he cared about a maid.

As if reading my thoughts, he continued, “And don’t worry about your job. My mother doesn’t know we know each other, and she has no idea what happened to you. I made sure of that. As far as she’s concerned, I’ll be recruiting three of her servants—you, Celia, and Maya. So, you have nothing to worry about.”

That was a relief. At least after this was over, I could return to my real job. Not wanting to argue further, I simply nodded. Jordan smiled, satisfied.

A few days later, I was ready to leave the hospital. While Maya packed my few belongings, Jordan’s personal bodyguard, John—who always wore black shades—walked in.

“Are you ready to leave?” he asked.

We stepped outside, and a sleek black car was already waiting for us. We climbed in, and soon, we were on our way to Jordan’s house.

“When Jordan Denver says he’s bought a property, better believe it’s one hell of a property,” Maya whispered, and we both giggled.

She wasn’t wrong. The place was grand—beyond beautiful.

Jordan stood by the doorway, waiting for us. As soon as the car stopped, he approached and, without hesitation, scooped me into his arms.

I gasped. Everyone else froze, watching in shock.

“What are you doing, Master? Please put me down. I can walk,” I protested, squirming in his hold.

He didn’t budge. “The doctor said to make sure you don’t strain yourself. And, baby girl, just by walking, you’re already overexerting yourself. I don’t like that,” he stated as he carried me inside.

I couldn’t lie—I liked how small I felt in his arms. It was… comforting.

He laid me down on the bed, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart race.

“You have beautiful eyes,” he murmured. “I’m sure you’ve been told that a thousand times.”

I swallowed hard, my cheeks burning. No one had ever spoken to me like this before. But if I told him that, he probably wouldn’t believe me.

Just then, a voice interrupted the charged atmosphere.

“Master, we’ve found the person who tried to kill Miss Ella,” John announced.

Jordan’s expression darkened. And just like that, everything changed.
